Stayed at  Compact Hotel - Johor Bahru, Malaysia.
Compact hotel is strategically located at the heart of Johor city with City square, the largest shopping centre within a 5 min walking distance. In the evening a food street can be located at the backlane serving local delicacy such as barbecue seafood and local fare. A very good option for supper after shopping from City Square. Transportation is convenient to other parts of the city. Holiday Plaza ($6RM by cab) is about 10 minutes drive from the hotel. Good for clothing apparels, personal grooming and a little shopping for CDs and movies. For a good meal with more variety of local fare, you can proceed to Taman sentosa for local fare at a very affordable pricing. Take note to ask for pricing before committing on the food.

If you're a plus size lady like myself, you might want to try this shop are Pelangi Shopping Centre on 2nd level at Taman Pelangi. Just tell the cab driver Pelangi Shopping Centre the fare is around RM12 from the hotel. Anything more might be due to the traffic, you might want to bargain a bit more if they charge you anything more than RM12. The shop's name is fyi.

New Hongkong restaurant serves quality dim sum in clean, more upmarketlike restaurant settings, service was v attentive and price affordable- about 12RM i think pax for 4 ppl... Recommend this noodle house at corner of Jalan Serampang- this is N swee somth 4got the name... serves typical roast duck/charsiew wonton noodles & some dim sum. Food is good in non aircon humbler settings ... about 7RM pax. For anime lovers, Pelangi Leisure Mall has this shop wif a considerable collection including OSTs....

Check out Compact Hotel breakfast buffet every morning as its pretty affordable only at 8 ringgit for adults. Though the variety is small, but its quite worth the money. City Square has lots of shops and do check the reject shop which has plenty of clothes at affordable prices for the shopaholics. Sightseeing trip at the sultan abu bakar and istana garden are worth a visit too.

Flew into Singapore at 11pm. Beware! Don't take the "taxi" ride with the guys that meet you in the airport with smiling faces (they were friendly enough, but had a scam where we paid over $65 SIN to get to JB border) just catch a taxi from outside the airport. Compact Hotel was 1 minute from the Singapore/JB border and proved to be a good budget hotel. Stayed here 2 nights in order to pre book flights etc for the rest of our Malaysia trip. Go to Air Asia office (or on internet for CHEAP domestic flights!! We got flight from KL to JB for about $14 AUS!!! Taxis cost more!)

Next stop was Penang (taxi to JB Airport round RM35...ALWAYS confirm price at the start! No meters in malaysia...only working in Singapore). Stayed at the 4 star Paradise Sandy Beach Resort (was upgraded to room with a sep lounge and kitchenette... EXCELLENT value and location for a very affordable price, highly recommend it!) Sightseeing... booked a taxi from the resort (ask for leslie... a HUGE help!) for 4hours at RM100!... oh, and the night markets here are good value! and the Roti Chanai from a local hawker store only RM24 for 4 people!!! Took a day trip to Langkawi on a tour, but would rather catch the ferry and hire a car next time!

Took a bus (RM12 each, bout 2 hrs) to IPOH (a small city of 60,000) relativly clean, and THE BEST TASTING FOOD in malaysia (say its the limestone in the water) oh and the white coffee - amazing! Also check out the limestone caves, beautiful! An overlooked tourist spot! Took a bus (RM15 each, 2-3hrs) to KL (a huge metropolis), stayed at Cititel Hotel (a great location if you want to shop! it joins the largest shopping complex in KL "The Mega Mall")

Caught a taxi ($70) to Genting for 2 nights staying at the First World Plaza (great price with good location, request a mountain view up in the clouds... BEAUTIFUL!) Also, all the entertainment you want with out going outside, from shops to resturants, theme park etc!!! Taxi (RM170) to KL airport at 3:30am. To JB (free shuttle to JB CITY (RM1 each for bus across the border to Singapore)...short stay. Places of interest: china town (nic-nacs), don’t worry about mustafas (famous name but prices nothing special, can’t even bargain there!) SIM LIN SQUARE (electrical good…6 storeys high...good prices!) + Fulan IT centre (5 storeys of electrical goods...also excellent prices!). Sentosa Island a great spot also! No Signpost restaurant (for huge crabs around $30). Overall, a great trip, will go back!!!

Stayed at  Mutiara Johor Bahru - Johor Bahru, Malaysia.
It is not far from Singapore. It is about 5 mins drive from the Johor Immigration and there are many shopping malls near the hotel. Next to Mutiara Hotel is the ever popular Holiday Plaza where you can find anything and everything to bring home. I understand that the hotel provides a shuttle bus to other popular shopping malls.
