It is a resort so that it is not convenience to buy some little stuff there. hotel can have a small shop for visitors to buy some daily stuff or snack.

Crowded city. Lots of traffic - need to drive carefully. Conveniently located next to a modern shopping complex - great for shopping.

No doubt the location of the hotel is perfect as it's near to the shopping centre. But, if the service rendered by the hotel is so disappointing, i rather choose to stay in a hotel which is further from the city.

Stayed at  Mutiara Johor Bahru - Johor Bahru, Malaysia.
Since my trip was a short one, I only had time to visit the mall next to the hotel and Giant, Pelangi Leisure Mall. I think that the shuttle bus to shopping malls provided by the hotel is a good idea, unfortunately, it was unavailable during my stay.

Great shopping at JB. Try Sedap Corner at City Square - their Chinese style Muslim food taste better than some Chinese food. This is a open food court. The Japanese restaurant is also popular with the locals and travellers.

Near the most happening shopping complex :City Square. Must try : Portuguese Chicken & House of Sundanese. At night, walk out of City Square and cross the road to a busy night market. There's lots of food stalls. Must try : The fried oyster stall at the end of the stretch of stalls. Note: Only sit at the table near to the stall that you're patronising. The hawkers are not going to be friendly to you if you use their tables and feast on their neighbour's food. Note: Never leave your money/loose change on your table unless you're prepared to give it to the beggers. Some can be pretty persistant but it's up to you to decide if you wanna give.

Holiday Plaza and city square are good shopping locations.

The hotel should also arrange for sight-seeing tour around JB eg. Angsana Shopping Centre, Durian farm, Ceramic factory and etc.
