Check out "Jewel of the North" Indian Restaurant, food was excellent and value for money. Also the night market is great fun and bargains galore especially in DVD's of the highest quality For 8 Ringgit.

Stayed at  Shangri-La Hotel Penang - Penang, Malaysia.
The Komtar Mall (connected to Shangri La Hotel) is run down and a waste of time, go to the Prangin Mall next door a much nicer experience. Lunch at the Eastern and Oriental Hotel is a nice treat and very resonably priced. Mosquito guard is essential if you visit the Spice Garden Park near Ferringhi Beach.

Great location to shop around. Don't miss the night market and make good deals bargaining. Also the hawker center in front of Golden Sands hotel is a good deal (beer is much cheaper here).

Five comments: Seafood is the thing to eat here. There are some major restaurants in Batu Ferringhi; however, we found the small local places near the hotel were also very good. Take a hike in the Nation Park (hire a quide). Use taxis to get around; they are cheap! The ocean here is not very good for swimming (although I did); jellyfish and polution. The Batu Ferringhi night market is a kick!

Stayed at  Grand Plaza Parkroyal, Penang - Penang, Malaysia.
The resort was interesting although it tends to be a bit smelly at night due to the open drains everywhere. Because at the night market the streets get very busy at night and are particularly hard to navigate with a small child in tow. The restaurants we found pretty much inditinguishable. However we had a good experience getting shirts made up at the Happy Tailor, very good value at 100RM (less than £20) and good quality. I would also recommend trips around Georgetown, it's a fascinating city.

Stayed at  Tanjung Bungah Beach Hotel - Penang, Malaysia.
Penang is a very hectic island. Forget the image of a sleepy tropical island, this place pumps 24/7. Penang Street in Georgetown has some great shopping, as does the night market of Bathu Ferringhi. Get your bargaining hat on and have fun.

Stayed at  Grand Continental Penang, Hotel - Penang, Malaysia.
I hired a taxi with a driver for a rate of RM$25.00 per hour. However, this is just a general rate as the driver is always willing to negotiate the rate despite the fact that he brought me around the island for a sightseeing. Restaurants and foodstalls are numerous but I would like to recommend Caravan Cafe which is famous for its nasi kandar and nan. Other stalls are available at Gurney Drive which is just 15 minutes drive from the hotel. You may find a great variety of foods there as well as one of the largest and most modern shopping mall in town, The Gurney Plaza. People there are generally helpful and friendly and they have very good knowledge on the history, geography, social, aspects of the island.

The location of the hotel is easy to find, it is on the road side on the way to Batu Ferringhi. It is also very close to Gurney Shopping Plaza and the night hawker centre. Lastly, you can easily access to some of the tourists attraction such as the Ferringhi Night Market, Botanical Garden, Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si at Ayer Itam.

Stayed at  Ferringhi Beach Hotel, Penang - Penang, Malaysia.
Penang is a strange mish mash of attractions. Despite the obvious and aggressive pace of development, some interesting shopping, historic and natural attractions remain. Foodies will also love Penang.

I'd recommend visits to Mansion of Cheong Fatt Tze, Penang Hill, Gurney Drive for food and shopping (try the Penang Laska, Penang Char Kuay Teow and the Chendol)and probably the night market at Batu Ferringghi (although it is very similar to any other night market in South East Asia).

For tourists into architecture and design, I would recommend going to see some of the Ken Yeang Buildings such as Menara UMNO and I'd strongly recommend seeing the Mansion of Cheong Fatt Tze. They also provide very unique accommodation for the discerning traveller.

Stayed at  Sunway Hotel Georgetown - Penang, Malaysia.
The huge KOMTAR shopping complex is a short walk away. The foodstalls referred to are the McAllister Road stalls.
