We visited a few main temples in the old town, it is easy to walk around, not too busy. We went on an elephant safari at an elephant camp, which was a memorable experience, & very good value. The night bazaars are also a must, we bought lots of handicrafts and ate at the local cafes. We will definitely visit Chiang Mai again.

Chiang Mai Night Bazaar has become quite the tourist ripoff place. No really good prices like a few years back. It seems like they all agree on a basic inflated asking price, and will not drop below a certain ceiling. Prices are much cheaper at Chatuchak in Bangkok. Even many shops in Bangkok have lower prices! Too bad -- not like the old Chiang Mai market.

Very good Location in the Heart of Chiang Mai Newtown. Only a few Steps to Nightmarket and Anuarn market, the Old
Town is reachable by walking. Donīt miss the Sunday Evening market in the Old town, surrounding the Tapae Gate.

Antiques House and Dalaabaa Restaurants were well worth the visit both have great food and friendly service. An afternoon trip to the factory outlets is pointless, all items can be got from the Night Bazaar. A great little walk along the other side of the river (near Gallery Restaurant) has some quaint little shops in beautiful teak wood buildings.

Chiang Mai was more touristy than Bangkok, and very dusty. We did a great cooking course with Chiang Mai Cookery School. Also did a 3 day trek which Tamarind Village arranged for us. It was very reasonably priced, not too strenuous and very interesting. Shopping at the Night Bazaar is excellent in the main buidling which has antiques, fabrics, crafts etc. The Antique House was a lovely place to eat - a 100 year old Teak House in Northern Thai style. Eat in the courtyard, then wander around the house.

Took a tour with Journeys--saw ad in Magazine---Golden Tiangle, boat ride to Laos(extra cost), lunch, Burmese border, lunch, hill tribes, etc, for 800 baht. Great shopping-filled second bag and ordered dining room set to be delivered from Sudaluck furniture company after looking at several--willing to negotiate. All things in Chiang Mai better value than even Weekend (JJ) Market in Bangkok. Recommend Riverview Restaurant--music and food. Tuktuk is the way to get around--negotiate prices before getting in. Don't miss foot massage---1/2 hr plenty, 90-100 baht--great after doing shopping or touring.

I definitely recommend staying inside the old walled village; from there it's very convenient to walk to many of the wats, Tapae Gate, etc; things in the area are very reasonably priced (food, Internet cafe, massages, etc.); and the market that closes down Ratchadamnoen Rd on Sundays was amazing.

Absolutely do not miss the 120 baht lunch buffet at the Suriwongse Hotel. It was the best meal I had in Thailand. (But don't use their Internet room - it's expensive even before the 50 baht minimum they don't tell you about. Use the Internet cafe next to the McDonald's across the street.) The Night Bazaar is great fun, and prices are low by Western standards. But the prices are much better, and the selection much wider, at the huge Walking Street market every Sunday evening at the Taipei Gate.
If you like student souvenirs, on the way up toward Doi Suthep you can stop off at Chiang Mai University. The small student store has a good selection of good quality t-shirts and polo shirts, some in both English and Thai, and the usual school logo bric-a-brac. You won't find this in the street markets. Also on this route is the Central mall. On the lower level there are some pretty nice quality clothing and handicrafts shops. We always like going into the local supermarket and buying local cough drops, toothpaste, etc.

Watch for the Sunday Market that takes place outside the hotel on Sundays - it's just as good as the Night Market and a lot more friendly and easier to get around.
