Since we had two young boys, we only managed to go to the Aquarium and the Tiger show, which was okay. Food at "Poppies" was outstanding and we really enjoyed our evening at Zico's also. Some nice shops also for household stuff and jewellery.

A new subway opened in Bangkok in mid-July which will offer another alternative to the renowned auto traffic jams that occur at all hours of the day and night. The skytrain is also very good but not very extensive in coverage of the city. I always go to Jim Thompson's silk store just to look at the wonderfully high quality goods, but they are very expensive and one can get high quality goods at hundreds of other shops including my favorite which is just around the corner on Suriwong road, Silk of Siam. Jim thompson's also has a very reasonably priced cafe where one can get both Thai and western food. The key to shopping in BKK is to bargain and be careful about wanting soemthing too much. Be prepared to walk away if your price is not accepted, you will then find out if you have undercut the seller's cost or not. You will often hear, "wait a minute, how about..." or your offer may be accepted.

At the heart of the shopping mall with the convenience of skytrain right in front of the hotel. MBK is just a stop away. Take a taxi (about 20 mins) to this place called Weekend Market - ask the taxi driver to bring you there it is only opens on Sat/Sun 9am to 6pm. Be there at 9am to grab all the good buys. You can shop everything there except electronic goods. You can find branded stuff there too. Do not miss this place! DIE DIE MUST GO!

Close to Bangkok Night Bazaar (about 5 minutes walk) which has shops, music and food and is a great place to visit in the evening. Also very close to the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium if you wish to experience Muang Thai. An excellent restaurant called Mali is only 5 minutes walk from the hotel.

Bangkok has a mix between East and West where the 'Bangkies' are very devout Buddhists. This can be witnessed at night markets where salesgirls make their very first sale and thank Buddha for it. If you are into seafood, be sure to dine at one of the most inexpensive restaurants that serves one of the best seafood--SomBoon. Situated in Chinatown, near the Ramada Tartawan (or something like that). For great Thai cuisine at moderate prices, go to Baan Khanita--cool environment, great ambience, excellent cuisine, and awesome service!
Never take the BTS if you're travelling in groups of three or more as it makes more economic sense taking the cab as it's absolutely dirt cheap and gets you from point A to B in a jiffy during off-peak periods. For shopping, visit Mah Boon Krong or MBK--like how the locals call it for great bargains and a wide range of apparel and accessories. For even more awesome bargains, check out the wholesale market that is situated right next to the Indra Regent hotel and right at the doorstep of Baiyoke Sky Hotel and Baiyoke Suites.

I just found out travelling to bangkok during the month of may is not a good idea, with the unpredictable weather, the sights not that good and murky, and the shopping not that extensive in this time of the year. I would advise for first time travellers to bangkok to schedule your trip in the cool month of December, where the shopping is spectacular.

My Family and I Visit Kingdom of Thailand every year. In part because I'm married to Thai National and in part that I like the place and its offering. Thailand was never conquered by no man, so has not colonial leftover feel. It's a true Asia at it's best, from Architecture, to Culture. There is a vast number of Places to visit in Bangkok. Shopping like Siam Square, World Trade Center and sourounding areas. Sightseeing the Palace, number of exotic temples. Restaurants Western style like "Spaso", for local, Try Thai underneath the lobby in Intercontinental Hotel complex Sukhumvit. Moving around use Skytrain as much as possible, it's fast and eficient. Choosing location of your stay in Bangok is very important so try places around the Shopping areas Siam Square, Sukhumvit Road, that way it's very easy to go anywhere. Taxi alternative is good and relatively cheap, make sure they put on the meter (It's not a problem now, but there are always a rouge operators out there). Wear light clothes as the climate is Hot and Humid. Ladies endulge in Gold buying as you buy by weight regardless of workmanship Mabookrong is the best place for that activity.

MBK centre is just at the hotel downstairs...don't need to explore any other street/night markets cos you would have to spend lots of time and energy on negotiating on the price. At MBK Centre, most prices are fixed and are pretty reasonable...shoes/bags and clothing are offered at 199 Bhat.

For those looking for Thai Muslim food, try Deen Restaurant at Silom, across Silom Village. It's just a hole in the wall but food is excellent. Try the fried sour beef balls. You can also go to the mosque next to the market in Silom and visit the Welfare office for other recommendations and tips. For those looking for tailors, Smile Tailors in Silom (next to Narai hotel) does a good job, but make sure you go for at least two fittings. We absolutely love Bangkok and will be there again as soon as we can. People are friendly and helpful, and will go out of their way to help strangers.
Just be cautious of people selling things. One tip, approach them for help, but be careful of people approaching you offering help. For those going to Kanchanaburi looking for floating nun, beware. We had to pay an extra 100 baht for taxi to ferry us from the river boat to the temple, which ended up being only a couple of steps away from the bank. Three of us were then asked for 200 baht per person to see the nun, or they will not float. We did not take up the offer.
