Stayed at  Amari Watergate Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
Bangkok, what can one say. You either love it or hate it. It's a very hot, dusty, sticky city. Lots of stray dogs and beggars. Despite all this, it has its own sort of charm. There are lots of markets offering everything. Great handbags, belts, ties, household textiles, clothes. Just be sure to bargain, do not accept the first offer.

If you're looking for gems, can definitely recommend the Gems Gallery out on Rama 6 Rd. Most hotels know of this place and the gallery will send a driver to pick you up. They have a huge selection of jewels, gold and silver and the prices are not over the top.

Stayed at  Tamarind Village, Chiang Mai - Chiang Mai, Thailand.
I definitely recommend staying inside the old walled village; from there it's very convenient to walk to many of the wats, Tapae Gate, etc; things in the area are very reasonably priced (food, Internet cafe, massages, etc.); and the market that closes down Ratchadamnoen Rd on Sundays was amazing.

Stayed at  Ambassador Hotel Bangkok - Bangkok, Thailand.
Restaurants are excellent and I had a good dinner at Sea food place next to the hotel and made few pants and shirts from the tailor inside the hotel.

Stayed at  Royal Princess Chiang Mai - Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Absolutely do not miss the 120 baht lunch buffet at the Suriwongse Hotel. It was the best meal I had in Thailand. (But don't use their Internet room - it's expensive even before the 50 baht minimum they don't tell you about. Use the Internet cafe next to the McDonald's across the street.) The Night Bazaar is great fun, and prices are low by Western standards. But the prices are much better, and the selection much wider, at the huge Walking Street market every Sunday evening at the Taipei Gate.

If you like student souvenirs, on the way up toward Doi Suthep you can stop off at Chiang Mai University. The small student store has a good selection of good quality t-shirts and polo shirts, some in both English and Thai, and the usual school logo bric-a-brac. You won't find this in the street markets. Also on this route is the Central mall. On the lower level there are some pretty nice quality clothing and handicrafts shops. We always like going into the local supermarket and buying local cough drops, toothpaste, etc.

Stayed at  Baan Yin Dee Boutique Resort - Phuket, Thailand.
FYI: The Jim Thompson fabric store on Phuket is a factory outlet (no advertised that way!) and the savings were huge. Also the show at FantaSea in Phukhet is well produced and very professional. However, the show is at 9 pm. No need to get there for dinner to at least 7:00. We were taken there at 6:00, too early.

M Lee 05 January 2004
Stayed at  Chateau De Bangkok Serviced Apartments - Bangkok, Thailand.
We came mainly for the shopping and the food. Did not have time for tours. The shopping centres were very conveniently located (near train stations). My wife had some clothes tailored at Nova, a tailorshop located at Novotel Hotel (5 mins from Siam BTS station) and was very pleased with the quick service. There is an excellent restaurant (I forget the name, but it used to be a residential house) just 3 mins' walk from the hotel - turn left from the hotel entrance. It has a lovely ambience, quite posh, but not intimidatingly so, with prices that would pleasanatly surprise you.

Stayed at  Baiyoke Sky Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
You MUST get to know skytrain - to travel across the city (then take short hop taxis/tuktuk). Taxis and tuk-tuks to other side of city will take anywhere from 30 minutes (@ quickest) to 2 hours (heavy congestion!), be warned! Do NOT get in the tuk tuk (insist no stops along the way!) or sit at the restaurant unless you know the prices in advance. Insist taxi must be on meter or don't get in. Don't show too much interest in what you want to buy - be ready to walk away and prices will drop like a stone!

K Heitmann 20 December 2003
Stayed at  Majestic Suites - Bangkok, Thailand.
The Hotel is direct at the entrance of the NANA Entertainment Plaza ( 15 Meters walk). You will see a lot of working ladies and punters, but no problem here, but you will see them. There are some Restaurants around the Hotel in Walking Distance, McDo, KFC and PizzaHut as well. On the sidewalk in front of the hotel are t-shirt vendors and a Thai Soup-Kitchen.

The Hotel is 200 Meters from the next BTS Station away, and the way to the airport by taxi is only 25 minutes and 250 baht away, include highway tolls. There are at least 2 7/11 Supermarkets and a few Pharmacy´s in less then 50 meters available.

M Grehan 15 December 2003
Stayed at  Tamarind Village, Chiang Mai - Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Watch for the Sunday Market that takes place outside the hotel on Sundays - it's just as good as the Night Market and a lot more friendly and easier to get around.

V Rea 08 December 2003
Stayed at  Ambassador Hotel Bangkok - Bangkok, Thailand.
Bkk can be seen in about 3-4 days, the Grand Palace, Rose Garden and the Floating Market are a must. If you like shopping then you will love Bkk. You have many shopping malls to chose from selling everything you can think of,and then you have then street stalls selling 'fake' goods. On these street stalls they will give you a price, half it straight away and then barter a good price. After Bkk I recommend Phuket,it has a good night life and lovely beaches and islands you can visit.
