Stayed at Grand Hotel - Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam.

We visited the chi chu tunnels in saigon and also went on a three day tour of the mekong delta. Both trips we organised through delta tours (You'll find them in the packpacker area). They were an excellent outfit, excellent guides and very good value for money.
I also had a traditional dress made in M & M silk (just a bit further down from the grand) $40 and was beautiful!

We visited the Reunification Palace, War Museum, Chinatown, and the Ben Thanh market. We walked to most places exept Chinatown. At Ben Thanh, beware of coffee lady that sold us Vietnamese blue mountain coffee for $4/100 gms. The boxed coffee is sold at $1/250 gms. Other local coffee sell for $1/100 gms.

Stayed at Hoi An Hotel - Hoi An, Vietnam.

This place is great. After the noise of the big cities, it’s nice to relax here. You need to plan for a minimum of 3 days to stay here. Stay at the Hoi An hotel. Relax, more like shop till you drop. If you are on a short trip, buy all your souvenirs here. Shoes for men and women from China is good if you can get them home in one piece. T shirts come in a wide range at the market. For clothing, we highly recommend A Dong Silk. 36 LeLoi- HoiAn.
Now that we are home, we can assess the quality if it is good. It may not be the cheapest you will find nor the most expensive. Like the rest of Vietnam, the food is the highlight and Hoi An has its own special treats. Eat the tow specialties at Lucy’s 22, amazingly cheap. The Mandarin does a mean chicken curry. Service at some of the restaurants along the river can be very slow. We will definitely return to Hoi An.

Stayed at Hoi An Beach Resort - Hoi An, Vietnam.

Hoi An town was the prettiest and most charming place we visited in Vietnam - should not be missed! We wish we'd spent more time - it's the perfect place to spend time a bit longer and relax. Don't miss the cheap tailoring - we went to My My (164 Tran Phu Street near the Japanese Bridge) who made an excellent copy of a designer suit for 45 dollars! The riverfront is very atmospheric with lots of nice places to eat - we especially liked the Cafe Des Amis run by the very hospitable Mr Kim.

No hotel in Saigon is central, and I don`t know anyone who walks to get to see the sites that Saigon has to offer. However this hotel is near the main tourist market and the New World Hotel, together with one of recommended dining places listed in Lonely Planet.
If you need to get cash from an ATM then there is one opposite the hotel and there is a supermarket nearby that sells fresh bread and cakes. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Hoi An is a shopper's paradise. We ended up succumbing to the tailor's pleas to make us new wardrobes, and are so happy that we did! We also took a nice, easy bike ride out to the beach which is highly recommended.
The one thing to look out for: we went on an hour's boat ride with a woman in a boat on the river. She let us off at the end of a line of fishing boats. We had to walk across several boats to get back to shore. The boat's crews were not happy or friendly. Avoid this! The boat ride is delightful, but insist on being let off at shore!

Stayed at Rex Hotel Vietnam - Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam.
|
The Rex is in a great location. From the hotel turn right to Lei Loi street. It's about a 10 minute walk to the Ben Thanh market. Internet services are available in a large bank building/high rise, one block from the hotel on the corner of Le Loi and Pasteur. It's at the top of the escalator on the second floor. In addition to being air conditioned, a well-stocked grocery store is just down the hall from the internet "cafe".

Stayed at Vinh Hung 1 - 2 - 3 - Hoi An, Vietnam.

Hoi An was one of the highlights of our trip to Vietnam. The town is absolutely charming! We loved walking along the river and had a wonderful dinner at one of the many cafes looking out to the river. Hoi An is THE place for custom made clothing. Bring photos or ideas of articles of clothing (or shoes) and they can recreate them in about 1-2 days at very reasonable prices. None of the prices are fixed, so bargain, and you will get a bigger discount, of course, if you order more items.

Ho Chi Minh is a remarkable city. Definitely worth going back to at least once more! The food is something to look forward to. We had a taste of Vietnamese, Chinese, and French cuisine, at probably some of the best restaurants in town. Don't forget to try The Lemon Grass Restaurant, located in D Nguyen Thiep in the Dong Khoi district, for traditional Vietnamese food. The Camargue, on the other hand ,serves French food, and the place is a charming old villa with an open terrace. Le Bordeaux resataurant, onother French restaurant, is a bit out of the way, located in the Binh Thanh district, but it is well worth the taxi drive. The food is exquisite and the interiors charming and romantic. The Mandarine Restaurant is also excellent, and reputed to serve the best vietnamese food in Ho Chi Minh, but we found the interiors too overbearing.
Not to be missed are the Ben Thanh Market, where you can get great bargains for crafts and clothing, and the Fine Arts museum, which is just a few blocks away. You must check out the paintings of the local artists.
