Stayed at Green Park Hotel - Hanoi, Vietnam.

The hotel is good for shopping as shops are located around it. Have to do bargaining though. Sometimes you could get half the price the shop first quoted. However, found that Hanoi prices is much more expensive then Halong Bay, a coastal city with very nice views about 4 hours from Hanoi. The water puppet show is a must see in Hanoi.

Hanoi was a lovely place to visit - not a huge amount in the way of "sites" although the whole Ho Chi Minh mausoleum/presidential palace area was very interesting/pleasant - shuts at 11 a.m. until the afternoon though.
Nice atmosphere there - very few cars, hundreds of bicycles and motorbikes. We walked most of the time, although there were taxis quite easily available, also cyclos, although agree fare in advance. The only thing we disliked was constantly being hassled to buy postcards/guide books etc.
Good shopping as far as lacquer ware, table linens and silk articles is concerned. Incredibly cheap, even compared to somewhere like Thailand, especially to eat and drink. Recommended restaurant: Hoa Sua - don't know address as it was moving two days after we were there. Current tel no = 04/824-0448

Hotel is located at the center of everything, very convenient. Walk to The Cidadel from hotel is only about 25 minutes at most; when taking "SHICRO" to the Cidadel, please DO negotiate with "Shicro Driver" for FAIR charges.
When my husband and I took the "Shicro" to Cidadel from Morin Saigon, the prices we negotiated before getting on Shicro was 30,000.00 VND for each person/each way; then on the way to Cidadel, they OFFERED to take us from Cidadel to Museum afterwards (which the museum was only about 5 minutes walk away from Cidadel). The way they offered sounded to be complimentary. And we thought even if with charges, how more expensive could it be? After all, it is only 5-minute walk distance; and we were also very careless that we did not ask exactly how much extra charges would be. The fact was, they made a long route around old quarter of Hue, and when we got off the Shicro in front of museum, they have asked for 100,000.00 VND per person for the trip.
My husband and I felt to be cheated, somehow. Since then, we have been avoiding Shicro for the entire trip in Vietnam.
For those who are interested having Custom-made Ao Dai, "Morin Silk" at the hotel could be your choice. I had two sets of Ao Dai made from "Morin Silk" and they fit perfectly. About USD 20.00 each set.

Stayed at Melia Hanoi - Hanoi, Vietnam.

Old quarters - lovely to look around. Great places to shop on Hang Gai street especially for silks/ lacquerware. Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, his house, the water puppets, the opera house are worth a visit. Cyclo rides a must, fix price first.
Restaurants - The Emperor and the Seasons of hanoi were both excellent and the Sukothai very good for evening meals.

Stayed at Hoi An Riverside Resort - Quang Nam, Vietnam.

Don't fill your suitcase when you pack for the trip as you will end up buying clothes in Hoi An. In one day's time my husband had a suit tailored for $40US and I had several Thai silk and Chinese silk skirts and pants made at a very reasonable price.
The beach at Hoi An is lovely and very quiet. Overall, Hoi An is a great stop between the crowds and hustle of Hanoi and Saigon.

Stayed at Caravelle Hotel - Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam.

I would recommend the following restaurants: Tib (fried spring rolls and shrimp on sugar cane), Temple Club (steamed fish w/scallions and soy sauce and appetizer sampler), 3T (grilled live prawns).
If you are into night clubs/discotheques and want to experience the young, local scene, go to Blue. This place like many other local night spots close at midnight so make sure you get there early. If you are into the ex-pat scene, you can catch good live music at Vasco's and Saigon Bar. And if you are looking for a trendy lounge atmosphere, Q Bar is a good choice.
Cho Benh Thanh is within walking distance and definitely worth a visit. Here you can get cheap souvenirs, local food, fabric, sushi plates, etc. Remember to bargain.
Take the metered taxi to get around. Very inexpensive relative to US and Europe.

Bustling and interesting city especially the tantalising food at the local restaurants. Exploring the city on a sitlow or motorbike is a great experience and the crafts are fanastic purchases

Ho Chi Minh is an exciting place. I would recommend taking a city tour to get the feel of the area before venturing out on your own. You can spend days in the downtown area and not see everything. Shopping and great restaurants are everywhere.

Hoi An is an unforgettable town, with warm and genuine people. The architecture is ancient and beautiful; and the prevalence of high-quality tailors makes the destination fruitful for shopping as well. Hoi An is one of our favorite places in all of Viet Nam.
