I was travelling through Hong Kong to mainland China to teach for a year. Guangzhou's Shamian Island is a great stop if you're heading toward Guangzhou or other Guangdong destinations.

Hotel is 5 mins from night market. Better shops, Star Ferry, main hotels are 6 mins by taxi. Best buffet is in Royal Garden, 8 mins by taxi. Recommend Cinta J's Indonesian BBQ restaurant for absolutely the best live music and great atmosphere (HK Island Central district). Don't let pushy taxi drivers take you to the airport - insist they take you to the Airport Express rail, cheap and 25 mins only. Station is near hotel.

Getting around in HK is always easiest and most reliable with the MTR - traffic can be unpredictable. Prepare, however, for walking quite long distances below ground until you reach the exit of the MTR station or the trains. There are plenty of good restaurants around however, I would like to mention the 'Beirut' in Lan Kwai Fong as a great place for dinner since the ambience and food are fantastic.

We loved visiting Hong Kong. We bought discounted visitor transit passes in advance at www.mtr.com.hk and got round trip airport express train service, free shuttle to our hotel, 3 days unlimited use of the subway system, and a (refundable) credit for other forms of transit. We added $ to the cards at a subway station and used them for the ferries, buses, and trams. The transit system is superb and signage is excellent. By all means visit the Peak, ride up the Escalator, take the double decker bus to Stanley, and cross the harbour on the Star Ferry. We had a memorable meal at Bistro Manchu on Elgin Street near the Escalator, asked the waiter to recommend some Manchurian dishes.

Spent a weekend in HK with friends. It was a short trip, highlighted by a very pleasant day-trip to Repulse Bay and Stanley Market on the south side of HK island. Definitely a change of pace from the crowds of the city. We recommend eating lunch at the only outdoor restaurant/cafe in South Bay Beach in Repulse Bay. It's right on the sand and has a view of the entire bay. To get there, take the double-decker bus from Central, exit at the Repulse Bay Hotel, then take a taxi to the beach at the end of South Bay Rd. Afterwards, Stanley Market is just another short taxi ride away, and there you can find street vendors, waterfront pubs, and more great views of the ocean.

Destination: New year Eve Count Down at Tsim Sha Tsui. Places visited: X'mas decoration at Statue Square (take a ferry from Tsim Sha tsui Star Ferry Pier to Hong Kong Island Star ferry Pier). Recommended eating place: Yee Shun Milk Company (Steamed Milk in Two Films) and Moon House (Dessert).

Excellent goose restaurant on Hankow Road in Tsim Sha Tsui. Spartan, down at heel, rude service, however unsurpassable poultry. Don't do a HKTB tour unless you're very short on time, or positively like tours. Everything is accessible by public transport. Our tour of the New Territories was OK - however we thought that we wouldn't be able to do it ourselves, and were probably mistaken. The money would have been better spent at a nice restaurant.

Head for the MTR and buy an Octopus card to get around cheaply and easily. 'Sweet Dynasty' on the Canton road is a restaurant worth visiting. Middle-range prices and quick service even though a very popular place. BP is very near to the Temple street night market, Tin Hau Temple [also on Temple Street], Kowloon park - great for early morning tai chi, shops and the MTR. Good place to be. See all you can and enjoy HK.

From BP International House, take mini green bus no. 6 to Hung Hom Station when you wanna take a train to Shenzhen for day trip shopping. Train ride costs HKD 33 per person. Travelling within Hong Kong is easy as Tsim Sha Tsui MTR is 10 minute walk from BP. You can go to Mong Kok, Ladies Market, Langham Place from there. Just ask around where to stop from Tsim sha tsui. 15 minute walk to Harbour City from BP to take a ferry to Hong Kong Island. You may want to drop by Star Avenue while you're at the ferry terminal. Hong Kong version of walk of fame. Ferry ride to KH Island is HKD 2.20. From Central Ferry Terminal in HK Island, you can take bus no 15 that'll take you to The Peak. Awesome scenery, especially if you get window seats at Marche Restaurant. If you wanna go to Repulse Bay and Ocean Park from the Ferry Terminal, you can take bus no 260. From Repulse bay you can take mini bus no 16 to Stanley Market for mini shopping.

With the use of the Octopus card, one can travel the MTR, KCRC (both train lines), buses and ferries all over Hong Kong as long as you have sufficient amount of money in the Octopus card. The fare is based on how far you are traveling so if you enjoy doing lots of sightseeing this may be a cheap way of traveling. I myself have traveled this way to Hong Kong Island to see Victoria Peak and Ocean Park; Lantau Island to see the Giant Buddha Statue & Po Lin Montastery; Northern Territories to see the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery at Sha Tin and Yuen Yuen Institute & the Western Monastery at Tsuen Wan; and Chi Lin Nunnery in New Kowloon at the MTR station of Diamond Hill. All these places should not be missed if you are really interested in doing some wonderful sightseeing. Besides these places, the Bird Market should not be missed neither.
