Luang Prabang was one of the highlights of our trip, along with the slow boat trip up the Mekong river from there to Huay Xai. Getting up early to give alms to the monks was a wonderful experience. I'd recommend it for anyone who wants to get away from the bigger cities and experience something a little different - and with ongoing development to improve the town due to the influence of increasing tourism, now is the time to go - before it becomes overly visited, but still has all the conveniences.

Vientiane is slowly changing from a sleepy backwater to being an interesting experience. There are an increasing number of good restaurants and entertainment venues. However even if none of these were available it is still worth visiting because of the amazingly friendly people and the baguettes. Ah!! How I miss those baguettes. It may well be the only worthwhile legacy the French left behind.

Quiet city, I would not rate it as a top touristic in Indochina. Nonetheless pleasant.

Took tour of capital and following day took tour of countryside. Tourist Department has a lot to learn if they want to promote tourism in Laos, very far behind Thailand or Vietnam.

Luang Prabang is truly a jewel. It is small, peaceful, full of ancient history, and populated by friendly people who have not been jaded by mass tourism or flesh trade tourists (thankfully, absent). Three days there was not enough!

Stayed at Villa Santi Hotel, The - Luang Prabang, Laos.

Great town and people, good night market at top of town, textiles and food may only be on weekends. Hired a moped and went to waterfalls, which were amazing, but be prepared for a unpaved road halfway there - leaves you a little saddle sore! But the views on the way of rice paddies and small villages were worth the pain!

Schedule no more than 1 day in Vientiane -- there is not much to see or do.

We enjoyed the many temples, a long guided walk thro' the hills the other side of the Mekong and a trip down river to a wonderful waterfall on our 4 day trip and I also bought some beautiful weavings. Easy to walk to nearby restaurants from Villa Santi.
