Stayed at  Compact Hotel - Johor Bahru, Malaysia.
The location is near to the popular shopping centre such as City Square, Komtar and Kotaraya. All of these shopping centres are within walking distance from the hotel.

City Square Shopping Mall is quite a huge shopping mall to pass time as well as to get some shopping done. Damai Garden nearby Crystal Crown Hotel is a very good and cheap place for seafood and other Asian food.

Getting around was easy by walk as it is centrally located near market/shopping areas. The Piccolo restaurant had very nice soup and also Pizza & Pasta for vegetarians.

It was a bit complicated due to the layout of JB-roads (many one way) in that area to get to the PAN PACIFIC. But eventually I saw a sign leading to the hotel - and I also found the entrance to the garage after consulting an employee outside - as there was another sign a few meters down the road, too. The main shopping complexes are two blocks or 5 minutes away on shoe express. If you are into satay and the likes - during the evening and lunch time there are numerous food stalls in the smaller alleys between the shopping complexes - almost like it used to be at Clarke Quay in Singapore. O.k. - not the same atmosphere-lah! I took an extended walk to the Sultans palace and in the attached park after breakfast - as the hotel had granted me a late check-out at 3 p.m. It takes approx. 15-20 minutes to walk there. I also found the TCI FRIDAYS in the vicinity - and the huge WATERFRONT CITY shopping complex, which is closed for renovation though.

I used the sofitel palm resort as an overnight stay before taking a flight to Kuala Lumpur. It is located in Johor Baru, near the new Sennai airport. The hotel provides a shuttle bus to and from the airport. The hotel is an ideal location for people who wish to take advantage of the cheap airfares provided by Air Asia, flying out of JB. You can fly into Changi, Singapore, take a taxi to the hotel for about $S60, get a night's sleep and then fly to KL cheaply to connect with other Air Asia destinations.

Flew into Singapore at 11pm. Beware! Don't take the "taxi" ride with the guys that meet you in the airport with smiling faces (they were friendly enough, but had a scam where we paid over $65 SIN to get to JB border) just catch a taxi from outside the airport. Compact Hotel was 1 minute from the Singapore/JB border and proved to be a good budget hotel. Stayed here 2 nights in order to pre book flights etc for the rest of our Malaysia trip. Go to Air Asia office (or on internet for CHEAP domestic flights!! We got flight from KL to JB for about $14 AUS!!! Taxis cost more!)

Next stop was Penang (taxi to JB Airport round RM35...ALWAYS confirm price at the start! No meters in malaysia...only working in Singapore). Stayed at the 4 star Paradise Sandy Beach Resort (was upgraded to room with a sep lounge and kitchenette... EXCELLENT value and location for a very affordable price, highly recommend it!) Sightseeing... booked a taxi from the resort (ask for leslie... a HUGE help!) for 4hours at RM100!... oh, and the night markets here are good value! and the Roti Chanai from a local hawker store only RM24 for 4 people!!! Took a day trip to Langkawi on a tour, but would rather catch the ferry and hire a car next time!

Took a bus (RM12 each, bout 2 hrs) to IPOH (a small city of 60,000) relativly clean, and THE BEST TASTING FOOD in malaysia (say its the limestone in the water) oh and the white coffee - amazing! Also check out the limestone caves, beautiful! An overlooked tourist spot! Took a bus (RM15 each, 2-3hrs) to KL (a huge metropolis), stayed at Cititel Hotel (a great location if you want to shop! it joins the largest shopping complex in KL "The Mega Mall")

Caught a taxi ($70) to Genting for 2 nights staying at the First World Plaza (great price with good location, request a mountain view up in the clouds... BEAUTIFUL!) Also, all the entertainment you want with out going outside, from shops to resturants, theme park etc!!! Taxi (RM170) to KL airport at 3:30am. To JB (free shuttle to JB CITY (RM1 each for bus across the border to Singapore)...short stay. Places of interest: china town (nic-nacs), don’t worry about mustafas (famous name but prices nothing special, can’t even bargain there!) SIM LIN SQUARE (electrical good…6 storeys high...good prices!) + Fulan IT centre (5 storeys of electrical goods...also excellent prices!). Sentosa Island a great spot also! No Signpost restaurant (for huge crabs around $30). Overall, a great trip, will go back!!!

There is not too much to see and do in the city. We stayed there just one night as we were coming from Singapore and had to catch a flight the next day from JB. There are a few interesting buildings and one good shopping center. Half a day in Johor Bahru is more than enough to see the city.

Johore Bahru is a pretty decent place to visit and anyone can pop by Singapore anytime they want, even just for a day trip, as long as you bring your pass port. Pop over by the causeway coach and just wait a bit at the immigration and you're there. Food and shopping in JB is much affordable compared to singapore though.

Going around Senai (the town) is a breeze, as the signages are adequate. Food is plentiful and comes cheap. Try the Mickey Restaurant restaurant, highly recommended by my Girlfriend. Rest assure mice are not the restaurant's only main dish, and get ready to tuck in to lots of other delicacies like seafood, local food, etc. Please check out the Johor Bahru town if you have the time, and cross over to Singapore and look for me if you have more time. Cheers.

Travelling across the causeway from Singapore to JB is a pain due to the jam and taxis do not travel direct from point to point. The best way for me is by JB Airport Limousine Service as the Singapore Presido Limousine service do not go to JB. We had a good driver, Mr. Tan Seng Lee (tel:012-7705829) who made a difference to our trip.
