Kuching is 3/4 hour away by bus and is a great city for experiencing the real Malaysia. The hotel organises excursions all over and so even when you are tired of loafing by the pool there is masses to do.

I recommend visiting the Bako National Park but you need to arrange a private taxi which should leave the hotel around 7-8am. The Sarawak Cultural Village is a few minutes walk and well worth the visit.

Lovely place-a bit isolated ie only really the hotel resort there and a few local resturants a short taxi ride away - but this was what we wanted for a few days. Hotel had a booking agent where you could organise trips. Don't expect luxurious resturants outside the hotel -Malay resturants are very basic - don't let that put you off the food can be wonderful.

There was a tour desk at the hotel, and we made arrangements through them. We rented a car for two days and drove around the Kuching area. We also visited the wildlife rehabilitation centre and saw some orang-utan. We spent an entire day wandering around Kuching. It is a very pretty city, but there's not that much to do there. Our favourite day was the day we spent in the Bako National Park. We booked a tour through the hotel and were with four other people. Our guide steered us away from the other groups, and we had some wonderful sightings of probiscus (?) monkey. The scenery in the park is stunning. We can't really recommend any restaurants...We live in Thailand and generally found the food uninspiring in comparison to what we've become accustomed to.

Easy to get to Kuching, which is the main town in the area. The local sights are quite interesting but will not take very long to cover. The beach was being rebuilt when we stayed, but in any event I expect that they have to fight to keep the sand on the beach.
An ideal place to spend your days if you do not want any entertainment and you are not fussy about what you eat.
Local soundtrack in the resteraunt was excellent, buying the CD "Masters of the Sarawakian Sape" was our best purchase.
