I did the 3day/2night Halong Bay trip with Fansipan/Vega travels as recommended in Lonely Planet. They really did seem to be the best for good value when I compared notes with other travelers. Take a couple of cyclo trips around the old quarter - all the tourists do it and there's a reason why - it's the perfect pace to soak in the atmosphere. I'm not much of a shopper, but the neatest thing I found were custom-made rubber stamps. You can get all different beautiful designs and customized with a name, too, if you like. If you can manage getting up early one day, it's well worth walking around Ho Kiem lake at 6:00 or 6:30. It's packed with Hanoians doing their morning exercise.

Vietnam: Saigon was amazing - the most capitalist city I've seen in a 'Communist' country! Hanoi very sedate by comparison but charming and arguably has the better shopping contrary to popular belief. Hoi-an is a must stay - relaxed historic town - get a new suit made for £25 there. Trips: any of the standard tours are recommended especially river trips for the scenery. ate local food off street stalls - was mostly great, but did pick up a tummy bug along the way! took internal flights to get around so can't comment on bus/train. Vietnamese invariably charming.

I am 77 1/2 years old, American, extremely well travelled, experienced. My favorite city in Vietnam was Hanoi--good things to see in and away from it, very fine restaurants such as "Wild Rice" beautiful inside, excellent food. Halong Bay of course I liked, the Mekong Delta for early morning floating markets, and the charming city of Hoi An a great delight. I ran out of energy but wished I could have gone to Sapa for a treak and a chance to see local colorful markets. I prefer always to travel solo, no guides except at Siem Reap, Cambodia to visit several of the temples. Definitely no tours. Not for everyone of course but I'm an independent artist.

Hoi An is a very beautiful town on both the river and close to the beach. A great place to get a tailored made suit as 3 pieces costs approximately US$60 (I went to BiBi Silk in town). The cooking classes out of Hai's Cafe were very useful and the Red Bridge Restaurant is located in a beautiful setting and is very reasonably priced.

Hanoi is hustling and bustling and a 'must-do' Asian city. And the art shops are an essential 'must-do' for buying Vietnamese art. Had lovely food in the evenings in the 'Wild Rice' and 'Emperor' restaurants...and good lunch food at 'Little Hanoi'. We didn't take tours, but did our own thing, using taxis or just walking!

Hoi An is a great place - best food and bars were The Cargo Club and the Tam Tam bar.

If you don't like crowds this is not the place for you! trying to cross the street is a major undertaking, but with a sense of adventure - an exciting city to visit. Fantastic restaurants, good shopping at markets and really interesting visits to Mekong Delta, Chi Chu tunnels etc. we were there during Tet festival so probably busier than usual.

Red Bridge, Tam Tam, Cargo Club and Des Amis are restaurants we would certainly recommend. For tailored clothing try A Dong on Le Loi street (they were excellent and recommended by hotel).

T & A Silk for tailored outfits, Temple Club for lunch or dinner (great deserts downstairs, separate eatery), Bamboo Cafe by Bentan Market for refreshing and reasonable meals, Saigon Saigon Bar at Caravel Hotel for the great view of the city.

Give the beach at Vung Tau a miss - although conveniently located near HCMC, it is horribly polluted with crude oil. Although one can swim in one of the many hotel pools, one wonders about where the seafood served in the restaurants comes from.
The Mekong River cruise from Mytho is on the other hand, a highly pleasurably and recommendable experience.
