Orchard Road was not my cup of tea: just a string of large shopping malls, similar to what we have in Australia. On the advice of some locals, I shopped for an iPod at Sim Lim Square; I recommend it as the place to shop for consumer electronic gear.

I arrived with Tourist written on my forehead; my first encounter with a "Taxi" cost $45 for the trip from airport to hotel; it should have been $25 at the most. The second encounter was the offer to tour Singapore for $5 an hour, which doubled when my wife entered the taxi; the sites turned out to be a tailor, camera shop and jewellry outlet at which he was waiting for his commission. I never toured Singapore.
However, during my short stay I had the opportunity to visit Sentosa Island utilising the Cable car ride. I would like to have spent more than half a day, as it was not sufficient to see the things I wanted to see. THe ride on the cable car was worth the trip.
I also took a trip to the Zoo for the night safari. It was a most enjoyable outing and provided value for money.
The Mustafa Centre for those wanting to shop at a location offering competitive pricing, is worth a visit.
Raffles is a short walk and Orchard Road was within walking distance.

We visited the Zoo (very hot), Bugis Junction (walking distance from our hotel), Boat Quay and Clarke Quay (very nice walking spots), and China Town. I recommend an evening walk along the river. Eating places are concentrated along Boat Quay, and drinking (or expensive dinner) spots are along Clarke Quay (and only open after 3pm). Of course, we ate several meals in Hawker centers, then ate a few meals at Raffles City to calm our overly stimulated stomachs. Don't miss the New Zealand Ice Cream shop in the basement of Raffles City mall if you're there, and Out of the Pan is a nice restaurant with an eclectic, east meets west menu.

There is a restaurant across the street called Prego that has wonderful salads and pastas at reasonable prices. Get there early, as it's very popular.

Singapore is a shopping destination. Always great offers in every mall. Great places to go at night is Clarke Quay and Boat Quay. Orchard is also nice for a walk or an al fresco cafe. Spots to have local dishes is Newton Hawker Center (late night), Holland Village and Lau Pa Sat Hawker Center. You must try the Chili Crab!! The local beach is not very nice, but you can take a ferry that will take you to great resorts in Bintan Island, Indonesia. Just check for visa requirements because beginning 2004, Indonesia has changed immigration requirements for many countries. In Bintan one of the nicest resorts is Mayang Sari. Look at a travel agency in S'pore. It is worth it.

If you want something else than shopping and you like nature, don't miss the Night Safari, it is a wonderful experience; take the tram and do the walk, while in the first one you can see different kinds of rainforest and hear an explanation, in the second one you can get face to face with giant bats and walk near crocodiles without any risk.

From all the natural, cultural & shopping experiences that Singapore has to offer, if you have a spare night a better idea rather than going to a restaurant is to go to the Night Safari, it is a unique experience. You can walk the trails or take the tram, the recommendation...do both.

This trip to Singapore was more for business and meeting up with some old friends. We got around easily by walking, taxi or the MRT ( subway train ). The food court in the Raffles shopping city, just opposite the hotel, is great with a good variety of food to choose from. The garden restaurant/bar in Chijmes, also opposite the hotel, is a relaxing place with live music for drinks & tapas and other Mediterranean food. For 5 mins's walk, one will find the bright light busy night market Bugis that sells local's souvenirs & fresh fruits. From here Bugis Junction, one can reach easily the nice cosy department store & cinema. The other side is Sim Lim's Square for the computer maniacs. Another corner is great for the Buddhist followers with books, vegetarian food and worshipping accessories. The hotel itself looks typical but its location & the convenience in getting around will spoil you with choices.

Beijing is very clean (we last visited in 1997) and a lot of people stopped to talk to us, mainly to practise their English, but they were very friendly.
