M Beleyme (2nd stay) 13 February 2005
Stayed at  1929, Hotel - Singapore, Singapore.
Loved Singapore and am going back. The Asian Civilizations Museum was the best museum I've been to! The Coriander Leaf restaurant at Boat Quay was the best meal on my whole trip. If you flew with Singapore Air, I recommend the SIA hop on bus. Good for a general overview of the city and gets you out to the Botanic garden which is quite out of the way. The Night Safari was fantastic. Go early. You can eat there. Long q's.

Stayed at  Broadway Hotel - Singapore, Singapore.
A great introduction to Singapore is the arrival...Changi airport is a city-within-a-city! And the prices are not much higher than downtown. There's even a free internet kiosk at McDonald's! Local calls are free and there are lots of other free internet access points. A city that never sleeps! Even in Little India you can shop at Mustafa's department-store or have a meal and refreshment at 3-am! Buses and underground trains (MRT) are cheap and plentiful! Taxi's are reasonablt priced (SGD$2.40 flag-fall and $0.10/100meters).

One of the cheapest areas to get 'real' 22-24k gold jewellery is in Little India. We found one shop offering at SGD$22/gram for 22k. Computers and other IT items are plentiful at Sim Lim Square...but...I found the best variety and best deals for the latest models at FUNAN IT Center on North Bridge Road. The 'ambiance' is also much better (less crowded, less hassles, good food shops).

For money-changing, I suggest only deal with licenced outlets. Mustfa's on Serangoon Rd in Little India offers some of the best rates and is open 24-hrs. The ONLY place to get 'pirate' you-know-what is in Johore Bahru(Malaysia) which is easy to get to by bus on a day-trip costing $1.90 to 2.40 each way). Pick-up the bus a few blocks from Bugis Street MRT station. The JB-Express at $2.40 is recommended as it is Air-conditioned and doesn't make any stops. Once across the bridge and out of customs, just walk about 8 blocks to City Plaza (clothes, shoes, DVD/VCD's, Software, music). DO NOT TAKE A TAXI from anywhere near customs unless you want to be ripped-off! Make sure that you get some Malaysian-money BEFORE going, as I found the exchange rate much better in Singapore for Malaysian Ringgets. introduction to Singapore is the arrival...Changi airport is a city-within-a-city! Stayed at  Meritus Mandarin Singapore - Singapore, Singapore.
Go to Craig Quay and Riverside Point for evening restaurants and bars. Plenty of variety both for food choice and ambience. The Underwater World at Sentosa Park is a must for all ages.

Stayed at  Traders Hotel Singapore - Singapore, Singapore.
Whenever I visit Singapore, I try to visit Sentosa. But instead of going straight to Sentosa, I like to hire a taxi to take me up to Mount Faber cable car station. Mount Faber is supposed to be one of the highest points in Singapore, and it is hard to understand why. Mount Faber is more like the Mid-Levels in Hong Kong, that is, the Peak is twice as high as Mount Faber. Still, the ride on the cable car from Mount Faber to Sentosa offers great views, especially the pool on a cruise liner parked at a ferry terminal. One mistake I keep making when I've gone to Sentosa the past few years is I always buy separate tickets for the cable car, admission to Sentosa and some rides, instead of a package that includs everything. If you add the separate prices up, the package is cheaper. Sentosa now has the Sky Tower which is similar to the one at Ocean Park. It offers great views and is airconditioned. Once you've been up the Sky Tower, you don't need to waste money going up to the Merlion Tower, since the views aren't that great.

Stayed at  Orchard Parade Hotel - Singapore, Singapore.
Singapore has a great vibe. A must is the Singapore Zoo, a bit of a trip to get there but well worth it. We had great suppers at IndoChine at Clark Quay and Vietlang in Cijmes. Definitely need to have a Singapore sling at the Raffles Long bar, gives of a really old colonial feeling. Found the metro really easy to use.

Stayed at  Peninsula Excelsior Hotel - Singapore, Singapore.
If you are here a few days get an EZ link card for bus and MRT travel, MRT very efficient and cheap, not that cabs are dear though. If you want perfume get a few prices first then go to Jasina cosmetics in High Street Centre on North Bridge road. Not a place you would normally look for a perfume shop but but best prices (and I've checked dozens of places).

Stayed at  Meritus Mandarin Singapore - Singapore, Singapore.
The location is excellent, only a 5-min walk to Somerset MRT station. Chatterbox is a good restaurant with famous Hainan Chicken Rice, and sumptuous breakfast buffet in the morning.

Stayed at  Panorama Regency Hotel - Batam Island (Indonesia), Singapore.
Batam Island is full of great nightlife and places to eat. Relaxed people and way of life. Bought many DVD movies for my collection at home. Shopping is good at Lucky and Centrepoint malls which are very close to downtown Nagoya. If you want real Indonesian experience go to the Pacifico Disco. It's open late and full of people, loud music and very dark. Lots of taxis and motorcycles to take you around town.

Stayed at  Asia Hotel - Singapore, Singapore.
Using metro in Singapore is very easy. If you fly Singapore Airlines, you can jump to a Singapore airlines bus tour paying only S$3 per day but you must show your boarding pass everytime you want to buy the ticket, S$6 without boarding pass. Boarding pass to be used within 7 days. I took this Sing-airlines bus tour two days in a row because there were too many places to see/visit. You can also take a free city tour if you have sometime to kill during transit if you fly Sing-airlines. I took River tour which was fantastic. The view along the river was just breathtaking.

S Oconnor 02 January 2005
Stayed at  Mana Mana Beach Club - Bintan Island (Indonesia), Singapore.
The Bintan Resort area is a secure zone of resorts on the north coast of Bintan Island, Indonesia. It feels like a Singapore colony since the currency used is the Singapore Dollar, the electrical outlets are Singaporean not Indonesian and the local population are not permitted in the area unless they have a pass. If you want to experience any Indonesian culture, you have to hire a driver and venture outside the barbed wire fences and security guards. If you like to travel and experience new culture and new food, I do not recommend Bintan. If you want a beautiful beach with privacy and security, Bintan is heaven. I would highly recommend Bintan Resorts for families with children.
