Loved Capetown as a city. Recommend touring around Capetown on the 'topless bus', also take advantage of organized trips to places of interest, i.e. Townships, Robben Island etc.

From there you can easily visit the Water Front, where everybody seems to be at night, table mountain, shuttle leaving from the Tourist Information Center, just two minutes walking distance from the hotel. For the Wine Route, we rented a car, ask the hotel concierge, they worked an ok deal for us. The car is also useful to visit all the bays surrounding the city, Cape Point, and you can get to Hermanus too, just to try your luck on see whales, we didn't see any, and apparently September is the best month, we saw whale thought just driving down on the coast to Cape Point. On Long Street, try Mama Africa, for good ambience and African Food. And for the most adventurers, try Bob's Place, a dodgy looking but very friendly pub.

Weather was great (even though it was Autumn). Visited Table Mountain which was spectacular because of the clear skies and lack of wind. Also drove to Cape Point which again was stunning. Our first trip to SA, but not our last!

Cape Town is an excellent destination for starting a trip in SA. There was enough to do to concentrate on the garden route/wine route and Cape Town surroundings without venturing further. Car hire and driving are exceptionally easy as roads are fairly empty and SA drives on the left. B&Bs as well as hotels are plentiful and cheap as is eating out. People are very friendly and helpful and always willing to give ideas of where to stay, eat, travel to next, etc. Local private game parks near Port Elizabeth are malaria-free hence no need for medication. We went to Schotia Game Park which was very good value. The advantage of a small private reserve is the guarantee of seeing whatever animals are around as the rangers will contact each other to inform of whereabouts. There are others in the vicinity which may be worth also having a look at.

Cape Town has a lot to offer tourists. The usual places to visit is Table Mountain, V&A Waterfront, Boulders and Simons Town to see the penguins and Robbens Island. I would recommend a Township Tour to District Six which is very informative on what South Africa was like during apartheid.
If you are lucky you should see the musical District Six after you took the tour. A great independent Travel agent is GC Tours. This is Errol's company and he is so knowlegeable about Cape Town (tel # 021-691-9192/Cell: 082-968-5636). Other things to see is is visit to Parliament(you must make reservations) and the Holocaust Museum.
If you do not have transportation Mosen at Unicab is reliable (Cell:083-733-9933).Just call him up and he will pick you up or if he is busy he will send someone else from Unicab which is the biggest cab companies in Cape Town.
A visit to Stellenbosch (wine country) is a must but you should spend 2-3 days there as just a day trip is insufficient. One of the best tours from Stellenbosch is Redwood Tours (contact Keith Cell 082-443-6480) He is not the cheapest but his tours as well as his knowledge is worth the extra Rand. Remember you get what you pay for.

Capetown has something for everyone. The cable car trip to the top of Table Mountain is not to be missed, nor is the Victoria and Albert Waterfront entertainment area. It is not that different from other "festival market" areas, but very well done. Personal safety was never an issue.
