J Davies 18 August 2004
Stayed at  Coral Garden Hotel - Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka.
We travelled indepently, with a Sri Lankan friend and a driver. We went on a trip in a glass-bottomed boat to see the coral reef. We also saw various fish and a giant turtle. Most other guests at the hotel were part of larger groups, but we were treated very well as independent travellers.

J Davies 15 August 2004
Stayed at  Grand Hotel, The - Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka.
We tried to get into the Hill Club (as recommended to us) for dinner, but it was fully booked. It may pay to book ahead if you want to do this.

C Wiseman 23 July 2004
Stayed at  Suisse, Hotel - Kandy, Sri Lanka.
Kandy is a nice location to leave for the hill country. Definitely take the train to Ella if you want a great experience. Old locomotives, open windows, standing out the door and spectacular views. On top of that it takes just about the same amount of time getting anywhere by car or bus due to the winding roads.

K Seow 19 July 2004
Stayed at  Sunset Beach Hotel - Negombo, Sri Lanka.
Jetwing Travel is a trusted agency over there. But, we felt we were overcharged for our full day tour at USD50 per pax. You may like to shop around or ask your hotel for tour recommendation and price. We took bus 905 to Negombo centre. It was an interesting ride. The train ride to Colombo was enjoyable and cheap too. But, the ride was 1.5 hours. Otherwise, you can pay 100 times more for a taxi ride between these two points.

R Smith 18 July 2004
Stayed at  Queens Hotel - Kandy, Sri Lanka.
Take the train from Colombo to Kandy and back the views and experiences and memorable. Elephant Orphanage and Botanic Garden are also well worth visiting.

T Don 29 June 2004
Stayed at  Taj Samudra - Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Recommendation..Jerome Gunawardhana our driver and guide. Speaks excellent english and was at our service all the time. He is available for personal tours right around the island. His vehicle is immaculate, he became our friend. We recommend him highly. His rates are the BEST and oh! so honest. He even invited us to his home for a welcome dinner. Contact: Jerome Gunawardhana, Phone: 0112 813102; No. 7 Perera Mawatha, Dutugemunu Street, Kohuwala, Nugegoda, Sri Lanka.

B De kretser 25 June 2004
Stayed at  Tropical Villas - Beruwela, Sri Lanka.
We hired a car as my mother, who lives in Germany, travelled to Sri Lanka and Asia for the first time. When stopping at a government guesthouse for breakfast, my husband Paul, who looks Sri Lankan but is British, was thought to be our driver, thus his breakfast came for free. Paul then carried on the game, calling myself and my mom 'madam' on every occasion. When stopping at another hotel in Kandy, he drove off to park the car and was handed a voucher by the security guard for free food and accommodation!!! I joked and said I did not realise that marrying an asian bloke could save me so much money on my holidays to Sri Lanka, as in future I would book a single room!!!

S Towson 17 June 2004
Stayed at  Mount Lavinia Hotel - Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The Mount Lavinia is an hour out of Colombo and two hours' drive from the airport, so if you are arriving late at night it can be a gruelling journey.

A Cheung 07 June 2004
Stayed at  Apa Colombo House - Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Whoever said The Gallery Cafe has gone down hill must have gone on one of their 'off' days. We tucked into some delicious chicken korma and equally tasty Sri Lankan fish head soup. The chocolate martini was a bit on the fiery side but certainly unworthy of a complaint! In terms of shopping, a lot of fuss has been made over Barefoot - we found it to be mainly good for children's toys and in general, overpriced. But living up to its hype had to be Odel's - we visited three times in 2 days! Tea at the nostalgic Galle Face Hotel provided a nice end to our trip (a short stopover from Male en route to Hong Kong). Overall, Columbo is a good city if shopping is on your agenda. You don't need a lot of time (or money) to cover the city's main attractions - perfect for stopovers.

O Alt 26 April 2004
Stayed at  Queens Hotel - Kandy, Sri Lanka.
Visit the Temple of the Tooth in the AM, before the crowds. As you enter, a booth on your right stores your shoes, do not follow "guide" into temple on your right. There is a pat down search as you enter. Take a tuk tuk to Helgas Folly for afternoon tea and cookies, or dinner in the PM, lovely views.
