It is a business town. The old town by the river is very prety.

We used Basel as our base and traveled by train to Strasborg in France and Freiburg in Germany, each about an hour away. Basel itself is an interesting city, with the old and new towns separated by the Rhine River. By the way, the hotel provided us a pass which entitled the holder to take trams and buses within the city free of charge. We took advantage of this and visited the residential and industrial areas of the city.
