Geneva is a really interesting city. Do not spend more than 3 days there on a holiday and make sure as it is not over Christmas or public holidays because just about everything you would want to see will be closed.
My favourite restaurant was a little French place right close to the train station. It has been there for hundreds on years and they server only one dish. Once you have tried it you will know why. Why mess with perfection.
We did some snow boarding in Verbier which you can get to by train from Geneva, and I would recommend doing. (It takes a couple of hours, but it would be better if you organised accommodation on the slopes).
The locals will generally speak to you if you need help but do not expect them to be overly friendly. The same goes for the tourist information board.
