This year ( 2005) our specific reason for going to Thailand was to attend Anzac Day service at Kanyu Cutting (Hellfire Pass) on River Kwai - well worth a visit to this area for lovely scenery, relaxed life style and a part of Thailand different from the bars etc., we stayed at River Kwai Village Hotel which was outstanding.

Try chatchuchak weekend market. Bargains to be had but you MUST bargain hard. Half the price they ask for the item you like and then offer them 20% less. You can now get there by BTS (get off at Mo Chit) or the new underground.

The good discos are to be found not only in Bangkok inner city. The outlying districts have quite good discos too. Try Night Speed in Bang Bon. Spey Royal whiskey at only 350Thb. When you're half wasted, why bother about the taste?

Firstly, after a long flight we decided to treat ourselves and take a limo to the hotel from the airport avoiding the hassle of finding a taxi, these are more comfortable than the ordinary taxis but they charge you 5 times the going rate and we wouldnt use them again, taxis are plentiful and easy to negotiate with. The night bazaar was excellent and well worth a visit, my wife is egyptian and used to bartering and we found the first price they give you is normally around 5 times what they will sell things for, when bartering dont be affraid to go low with your opening offer.
We spent 3 days in Bang Kok and 11 in Koh samui and found that over all the cost of things were way cheaper on the island, maybe only to be expected but unless its essential if you are travelling on wait til you get to the less cosmopolitan areas
All in all a great place and we would go back again

Generally, taxis are convenient and not expensive. But MUST ask to go by meter only. As for river ferries, use the public ones that work like buses and cost only 10B and have an interval of about 10min. Compare that to a private river taxi operator who offered 400B for two persons to the same destination! Had a lot of fun bargaining at the markets, only to realise that some MBK shops offer lower prices to start with. For example, an imitation bag starts at 1250 and was bargained to 200 with great satisfaction, then MBK shop sells it at 199! Also, street food is 20B and drinks are 10B usually. MBK restaurants are a mere 10-20B more and you get cleaner food in bigger variety and portions, plus cooler environment. No wonder most of the locals eat at the malls! Cinema tix cost 100B normal but we went for the Gold Class ones that cost 500B each and provided free drinks, blankets, pillow and socks! Remember to grab an official map free at the airport cos it's the best map you'll find. Information kiosks in the city streets also offer free tranlation booklets. Pick one up for fun.

We enjoyed all the normal touristy things to do in Bangkok...temples, Royal Palace, etc. One excellent restaurant that is highly recommended for exquisite Thai cuisine is Baan Khanitha, in downtown Bangkok.

Good Location. Just walk around 30m ahead (just beside the main road), you can see the "Wan Tan Mee' stall that you can never miss. From there you can go around Pratunam (Bayoke 1, Bayoke2, Pratunam Center & Pratunam market). At night if you cross the overhead bridge, and walk around 45m you can see the famous T-restaurant, food is nice and with reasonable price. My group (sister & husband, friend and husband Plus me and wife) have tasted the best Tom Yam ever in our life. Walk all the way down to the big main cross junction, turn right and cross the bridge, you will reach Iseatan. There is a lot of good roadside food and a lot of people is there eating nice food. They also sell all the cheap and good staff (like clothing, shoe (180 batt), very nice ear ring (3 for $50 bat), Very Very nice BBQ and Fried Chicken wing (5 bat), boxer shorts (70 bat). You can also see lot of elephant for people to feed them.
Opposite Iseatan and Centre World Plaza, you can see the Big C complex that just like carrefour. Walk further down you can reach SIAM and MBK. If you like shoppoing a lot around MBK around, than you can stay another 2 days in RENO hotel (870Bat) which is around 30M around from MBK and famous wendy house is also along the stretch. Do not forget to go to Chatuchat, than follow by watching the LIVE (Real fight) thai boxing in Lumpini Stadium and tour around the Suan Lum market at night. Do go to Pat Pong, Grand Palace, Chinatown and Damnern
saduak Floating Market.

My overall trip was great except for 2 incidents. Incident 1 - Went to Wat Pho and the weather was too hot to walk to Khao San Road so decided to take a tuk-tuk, which ended up as a nightmare ride. The rider told us he will take us somewhere on the way there, some tourist place. Since the ride was only 50 Baht, me and my partner thought why not. Realised it was a scam when we ended up at some duty free jewellery place. After that, he insisted to take us to some tailor nonsense place which we obliged coz the rider promised that right after he will drop us at Khao San. Rider "sort of begged" to do him this favour coz the tailor was giving free gas voucher that day for customers he brings into the shop.
Incident 2- A taxi that i took outside the Asia Hotel, the driver tried to talk me and my partner into diverting to some other tourist place though we insisted we only wanted to go to Chatuchak. He said the market is not opened yet. What nonsense, I'm not a first-timer going there. Though the ride that he offered to divert was cheaper, it's a total waste of time. It's a scam for the drivers to earn some side income for petrol or whatsoever again like the earlier incident. So lesson learned, prefably do not take cabbies or tuk-tuks outside the hotel premises but just right outside the lobby.
