Read the guidebooks. Be sure to take your time at the night market. Many of the clothing items I saw at the market in Chiang Mai and the Weekend Market in Bangkok I later saw for sale in small shops in Japan for five times the price.

Chiang Mai is a surprisingly large and bustling city, although much smaller and more manageable than Bangkok. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from - the Riverside being a good choice with a scenic table over the river.
The Chiang Mai Thai Cookery school offers excellent, fun 1 day courses which are worth trying if you have the time.

We used the tour company in the hotel and had a wonderful tour guide and driver. We had our kids with us and they loved the elephant camp and the snake show.

Changmai is a wonderful destination for all who want an "Asian experience".
Book a day or overnight tour to Changrai with a local travel agent "on the street". There are many of them and they will negotiate!!!
This will be an added bonus of your visit to Northern Thailand.

I have always wanted to visit Chiang Mai for its Lanna culture and the celadon tableware. And it did not disappoint me. It's fun to do antique shop hopping too. Silk and lacquer ware are also interesting. For people who like high quality home decor stuffs - Aka Walai gallery and tea room is worth seeing.
One restaurant I would recommend is the Grand Lanna. It's a beautiful and spacious restaurant in traditional Lanna style that serves great Thai food at a reasonable price. The late Princess Diana had hosted a party there, and the room is now named after her.

This is my second time to Chiang Mai. Love the place for its weather, food and cheap shopping. Go in December and January for that's when the weather is coolest. It's generally cool in the morning, hot in the afternoon, then cool in the evening.
If you're not sightseeing (Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest mountain is a must-see, and don't forget to try out the elephant rides and river rafting), then try to schedule relaxing activities such as massages, lazing by the pool and emailing friends and family in the afternoons.
While there, don't forget to try the Northern Thai speciality, Khao Soi (noodles in curry with crackers and a choice of pork or chicken). The best Khao Soi is Lamduan Khao Soi at Fa Ham. This lady used to make the noodles for the king. However, Fa Ham is not exactly a tourist area so you might have to ask your tuk-tuk driver to wait for you while you eat or else you might have difficulty finding a ride back. The Khao Soi costs only 20 baht.
Also, for a yummy Northen Thai dinner in a relaxing ambience (go early and choose to be seated in the garden), try the Antique House. It's only one road down from the Night Bazaar. It might be expensive by Thai standards, but it's still affordable. Cocktails and dinner for two came up to about 400 baht.

We went elephant riding, into to the hills, in a very authentic fashion, followed by a river rafting trip. We spent a delightful day at the Thai cooking school.
