Stayed at  Suriwongse Hotel - Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Very good Location in the Heart of Chiang Mai Newtown. Only a few Steps to Nightmarket and Anuarn market, the Old Town is reachable by walking. Donīt miss the Sunday Evening market in the Old town, surrounding the Tapae Gate.

Chaing Mai is a vibrant city with lots to see and do. Generally inexpensive with lots of shopping opportunities and excursion trips to choose from. The 1 day trek (elephant ride and bamboo river rafting) were very enjoyable experiences and not too strenuous so would recomend to young and old alike. The night market was excellent, and the artists corner particularly enjoyable providing excellent portrait work from photographs. If you are a fan of live music especially Rock (Jimi Hendrix, Doors etc.etc.) then the Pubs on the riverside especially the Brasserrie Bar come highly recommended.

Chiang Mai a very friendly place with a lot of good restaurants and pubs. Recommend The Pub, on Huay Kaew road, just down the street from the shopping center.

Stayed at  Chiang Mai Orchid - Chiang Mai, Thailand.
For those who are health conscious, there is a Lemon Tree store not far from the Night Bazaar and a nice vegetarian restaurant on Tha Pae Road recommended for lunch.

I had delicious fish tacos at the Salsa Kitchen (part of the Bagel Kitchen) in the old city. The old city is very pleasant for walking in the early morning and the evening, but traffic during the day is pretty bad, and forget going outside the old city on foot. Although the guidebooks say there is no bus service, there is in fact a #10 air conditioned bus which runs around town and goes to the very interesting Central Airport Plaza shopping mall. Nancy Chandler's Map of Chiang Mai shows the bus route and everything else worth seeing in Chiang Mai - it's well worth the purchase price.

Antiques House and Dalaabaa Restaurants were well worth the visit both have great food and friendly service. An afternoon trip to the factory outlets is pointless, all items can be got from the Night Bazaar. A great little walk along the other side of the river (near Gallery Restaurant) has some quaint little shops in beautiful teak wood buildings.

Chiang Mai was a welcome relief from the incredible "busyness" of Bangkok. We use a Tuk Tuk to see the sites around the city including jewelrey shopping at 100 B for a whole morning. The night market has lots of local items inc silver and gems plus the usual t-shirts etc. A highlight was the Zoo where they have a Panda house. There were only a few people there and the Pandas were out playing. It was quite and experience. We are definately returning to Northern Thailand.

I found that you can negotiate prices on the guided tours. I used one in a brochure that was at the hotel front desk. The elephant riding and bamboo rafting was terrific and one of our best experiences of Thailand. I highly recommend it. We were picked up in a mini van with a few other people. Our group was very small so we got a lot of attention from our guide.

There are so many local travel agemts to choose and are all around the hotel. My husband and I have choosen Focal Travel for our 3 days excursions. The price is pretty reasonable. On one of the excursions, we went to Golden Triangle. It costs 1000 baht per person. Next day, we visit safari which included elephant show. 1 hour elephant ride in the jungle, bamboo rafting, orchid farm and etc. It cost 900 baht per person.

If you do not like water splashed all over you at any time, anywhere, then do not go to Chiang Mai during Songkran (Thai new year) 9 to 15 April. On the other hand if you want to get into the spirit of the celebrations it is an unforgetable experience.
