Stayed at  Sheraton Chiangmai, The - Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Nice people, good food. Le Grand Lanna, the best restaurant for fine dining, serves authentic thai food. Good view is another one worth trying.

The Art cafe and the Riverside Cafe were wonderful restaurants to enjoy a vaired menu, great food and meet great people. The treks in the jungle are a must also.

The tour to the golden triangle was long. Once there it was interesting but it would be worth it to hire a driver for just your party rather than share with a group. One of our group was detained at the Burma border because her visa expired and we were delayed about 2 hours. That caused us to rush at the hill tribes. We wanted more detailed explanations about what we were seeing as we drove rather than just a 4 hour drive to get to a destination. All tours and sight seeing and drivers can be arranged through the hotel. The elephant camps were well worth the visit as was the arts and crafts tour. We arrived in Chiang Mai late at night and so we had arranged with the hotel to have a driver meet us. He was there with a sign and I would recommend arranging for a transfer to the hotel again.

It's very very hot in Chiangmai when I was there around 14-21 March. Moving around in the red pickup taxis is easy. Just bargain price before you get up. Need to bargain more at Night Bazaar. Should look around and compare before buying. I prefer the local markets (open till 6pm). Mangoes and chilled coconuts are simply delicious and you find them almost everywhere, between 10-15 baht.

The most valuable find there was the helpful cab driver that become our personal guide for the following day. 1400 baht ideal price. He took us many places no tour would have and was offering more. Glad to provide name when I find his card, has email address.

Most of the Chiang Mai Zoo is under renovation but still worth a visit but do not try to walk around, it's much to large for a walk. Prem seafood restaurant is much better than anything Phuket can offer at half the price.

A Palmer 28 February 2004
Stayed at  Tamarind Village, Chiang Mai - Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Chiang Mai was more touristy than Bangkok, and very dusty. We did a great cooking course with Chiang Mai Cookery School. Also did a 3 day trek which Tamarind Village arranged for us. It was very reasonably priced, not too strenuous and very interesting. Shopping at the Night Bazaar is excellent in the main buidling which has antiques, fabrics, crafts etc. The Antique House was a lovely place to eat - a 100 year old Teak House in Northern Thai style. Eat in the courtyard, then wander around the house.

Stayed at  Chiang Mai Hill 2000 Hotel - Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Be sure to visit the Elephant Conservation Center about 75 kilometers south on Highway 11. The elephant show and rides are great fun, and the Elephant Hospital there does this wonderful creatures a valuable service.

Stayed at  Suriwongse Hotel - Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Took a tour with Journeys--saw ad in Magazine---Golden Tiangle, boat ride to Laos(extra cost), lunch, Burmese border, lunch, hill tribes, etc, for 800 baht. Great shopping-filled second bag and ordered dining room set to be delivered from Sudaluck furniture company after looking at several--willing to negotiate. All things in Chiang Mai better value than even Weekend (JJ) Market in Bangkok. Recommend Riverview Restaurant--music and food. Tuktuk is the way to get around--negotiate prices before getting in. Don't miss foot massage---1/2 hr plenty, 90-100 baht--great after doing shopping or touring.

"The Whole Earth" is an excellent Thai/Indian restaurant and is near the city center. If you are travelling to Chiangmai to play golf, find a tuk tuk driver who also has a car who can take care of your transfers to and from the course for much cheaper than your hotel will arrange. The Royal Chiangmai and the Royal Lumphun golf courses are both excellent courses and worth your money and time to play there.
