I definitely recommend staying inside the old walled village; from there it's very convenient to walk to many of the wats, Tapae Gate, etc; things in the area are very reasonably priced (food, Internet cafe, massages, etc.); and the market that closes down Ratchadamnoen Rd on Sundays was amazing.

Absolutely do not miss the 120 baht lunch buffet at the Suriwongse Hotel. It was the best meal I had in Thailand. (But don't use their Internet room - it's expensive even before the 50 baht minimum they don't tell you about. Use the Internet cafe next to the McDonald's across the street.) The Night Bazaar is great fun, and prices are low by Western standards. But the prices are much better, and the selection much wider, at the huge Walking Street market every Sunday evening at the Taipei Gate.
If you like student souvenirs, on the way up toward Doi Suthep you can stop off at Chiang Mai University. The small student store has a good selection of good quality t-shirts and polo shirts, some in both English and Thai, and the usual school logo bric-a-brac. You won't find this in the street markets. Also on this route is the Central mall. On the lower level there are some pretty nice quality clothing and handicrafts shops. We always like going into the local supermarket and buying local cough drops, toothpaste, etc.

Chiang Mai is great. The people are the friendliest in Thailand. We took a tour with Take a Relax Travel email:panisata@hotmail.com. She is terrific and very helpful. The elephant trek was a wonderful experience. Also the vendors are not a pushy in Chiang Mai then other parts of Thailand. We stayed three nights and wished it had been more.

Stayed at Belle Villa Resort, Chiangmai - Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The hotel charged 2700 bahts each for the elephant/rafting trip. We got the same tour in Chiang Mai for 700 bahts each. For 500 bahts more we were picked up at the resort and driven around from place to place with a personal driver. We were able to stop at other different places and had a better day than if we were on a tour. There are many tour operators in Chiang Mai, visit those before booking the hotel trips. The food in the hotel was very cheap, nice and a good selection was available. There is no need to travel far for food.

Watch for the Sunday Market that takes place outside the hotel on Sundays - it's just as good as the Night Market and a lot more friendly and easier to get around.

Tours and trekking can be organised in the hotel or locally. Elephant rides, river rafting, hill tribe treks are all easily available. They are good value for money. Hire a car and driver--even better--and still remarkably economical.

We loved Chiang Mai. Not to be missed is the unbelievable Night Market -- get a bowl of delicious pad thai in the lower level food court for 30 baht, then shop the upper level antique stalls for some great bargains. The other highlight for us was visiting the Mae Taeng Elephant Camp, feeding and riding elephants, and floating down the river on a bamboo raft. Otherwise, we could barely tear ourselves away from the grounds at the Regent!

The food court at the night bazaar is quite good and inexpensive. Doidoman, a BBQ your own restaurant at the Central Shopping Plaza (downtown), is very good. Whole Earth is extremely good, pricey by Thai standards, but well worth it. The Japanese restaurant at the Royal Princess Hotel is also extremely good.

We played golf at the Green Valley, Royal Chiangmai and Chiangmai-Lamphun. Among the three, I recommend the Chiangmai-Lamphun for overall quality.

The Chiang Mai Thai Cookery School of Sompon and Elizabeth Nabnian (see Lonely Planet) is still highly recommendable. Traditional Thai Massage courses at ITM are too frequented, so the student/teacher ratio of 2:1 can hardly be maintained. They do a good job, though, and the atmosphere is very open and friendly.
