Chiang Mai is beautiful...try to go during the cooler season, though. April is oppressive.

Did a lot of touring while based in Chaing Mai. Were in three countries in the one day Burma, Thailand, and Laos (Golden Triangle). Toured Mae Son, fabulous scenery enroute. Well worth the long journey.

We came for Songkran festival, and this hotel was great. Despite being soaking wet when coming in at the end of the day (to clean up/dry up for dinner), the staff was helpful. Very easy walk to the night market, and easy to hire a driver for the day. Went elephant trekking, along with river rafting and factory touring. Really great place, Chiang Mai, and a must see when in Thailand.

Chiang Mai is a little more laid back but offers all that Bangkok has to offer. Prices are very reasonable and there seem to be more quality and variety of goods at the various markets.
One has to "hit the road" and explore on foot plus tour the exterior of the city by motorcar. What an experience speeding along rural roads at 80-90 MPH zigzagging through traffic and motorcycles. Food is just as good here as in Bangkok. Try the roadside restaurants in the back streets that are busy and without English menus.

We did some hikes with "Alternative Green Tours". A very small personalised company, that seemed quite different from the standard "hill tribe + elephant" tour. I enjoyed learning about edible and medicinal plants in the forest. She does both hiking and mountain bike tours.
We also took one day class with the "Chiang Mai Thai Cookery School". If we had more time, we would have taken more. Very well run class.

In general Changmai city is a bit of the un-expected. It's small size is quite astonishing and one can use a scooter to swing around town. If you are looking for a city experience of Thailand would rather recommend Bangkok. Changmai is very poluted lots of smog. If you are interested in manufacturing your own goods like furniture, ceramics, and silk products Changmai is a good starts, but then there is also Bangkok which has a lot more to offer and more unique designs.

Lovely city, especially for people who like Thai culture and Buddhism (a lot of temples) in the city and outside the city. A few good seafood restaurants near the night Bazaar.
