I recently discovered Kad Suan Kaew as well as Kad Luang for shopping. It was easy to catch a taxi to and from those places. I would recommend that visitors make it a point to enjoy the shopping experiences at both places.

The Wok restuarant around the corner from the hotel is very good, and also holds cooking classes. The Night Market is good, but try to get a knowledgable guide locally to save time. We ate at the Gallery restuarant on the river one night, food dissapointing but craft shops in this area are very good and the setting overlooking the river was great.

One thing that isn't on many peoples agenda when in Chiang Mai is a trip out to the Regent Hotel for dinner. Although expensive for a meal, the food is wonderful and the setting is just breathtaking.

Very tranquil. Elephant ride quite an experience. Yai arranged for private taxis for the day, which were cheap.

Chiang Mai is a really nice city, packed with temples and history. Sometimes it's hard to get a reasonable price for a tuk-tuk or taxi because the hotel is not in city centre. We hired a car and went to near national parks. I really can recommend this. The landscape is nice and even in dry season the waterfalls remain waterfalls.

The night market is wonderful and much better than in Bangkok, especially on Sunday, when it nearly doubles in size and the accompanying street entertainment is interesting. For the most part, the entire city is easily walking for hotels, restaurants, night market, wats, etc. The restaurants across the river from the night market are particularly good.

We decided on a private tour for the countryside around Chiang Mai, and this was well worthwhile. We picked the destinations and the driver took us wherever we wanted to go, as well as many previously unscheduled stops along the way. This included the elephant farms, orchid farms, waterfalls, hill tribe village, etc. This was arranged for us by the tour desk in the hotel. The only negative aspect was that our driver was not very proficient in English (nor were we in Thai) so communication was a bit difficult, but we got where we wanted to go.

we have travelled by plane but also by car ourselves and we found the driving and the road conditions very good. No problems except perhaps in Bangkok where orientation is not so easy.

Chiang Mai was wonderful compared to Bangkok's humidity. I would recommend the Mango Tree Restaurant.

Elephant farm about 45 minutes away was wonderful.

Chang Mai is really worth to see. Night Market is recommendable for collectors of handicrafts and Asian antiques. Some very nice restaurants and a lot of possibilities for excursions in the mountains and to the borders of Myanmar and Laos. Recommendable are also the traditionnal Thai massages for 5-10 USD an hour.
