Destination is fine, hotel tour desk is run by a mr fixit who can organise anything. Borders with Myanmar and Laos are apparently closed at this point.

I recommend taking a tour to visit the hill tribes and into the Golden Triangle. I used the services of RIT tours, which were professional and a good deal.

Chiang Rai is a very good destination. J. Travel on the main tourist street in town booked us a few good tours. The hilltribes are quite interesting, although you have to go on at least an overnight tour to find a tribe that isn't completely used to seeing tourists all day long. If your are interested in tours that include elephant rides, any tour with a one hour elephant ride is perfect. A 1/2 hour is not long enough, a 2 hour elephant ride will have you in pain for a couple of days afterward.

Day trip to the Royal villa and park in nearby mountains was the best feature, although we could hear the Burmese mortars shelling the rebels along the border. Chiang Saen is a pit, the National Museum there is closed Mon-Tues so plan accordingly.

very nice location. convergence of laos, burma and thailand is facinating.
make a point of visiting the hill tribes.
long-tail boat from chaing mai to chaing rai is a great way to take in the environment and scenery.

Lanscapes are gorgeous. It is worth trekking in the area to discover the various hill-tribes and their colorful traditions (which unfortunately I have not done).
