Long way from airport - paid 650 Bht - but it did take 50 mins. Taxis from the hotel were honest, reasonable and good drivers.

Karon beach is beautiful and was very quiet. Not sure how much this was due to depressed tourism during hostilities in Iraq however.

Kata beach is away from the hustle and bustle of Patong, but close enough to spend an enjoyable evening out and then catch a tuk-tuk back to the hotel. Kata beach is the best beach in Phuket (in my opinion).
Hiring a motorcycle is a great way to explore. A tour to James Bond island is also a neat way to see more of the surrounding area and Phang Nga bay is amazing.

Love the tours. A bit disappointed with Phi Phi Island tour because I can only view "The Beach - Leonardo de Caprio movie" from a distance (about 1 km away).
Restaurants are expensive for Canadian travellers in Phuket (compare to Bangkok) but it is still a good bargain for American and European. Lunch or dinner for two persons at Phuket in good restaurants cost the same as in Toronto, Canada.
Patong is lively. To other travellers - stay closer to the Patong beach for good restaurants and service. Most areas are just walking distance from my hotel. Go to Phuket Fantasea show. It's really amazing!
