The main drag of Cheweng beach is very touristy, noisy (taxi's motorbikes), dusty. But there are heaps of restaurants, shops bars etc. If you take a trip out to the marine park at Ang Thong on a speedboat, make sure you go on a calm day as the boat crew seem to get a real kick out of riding the waves and making everyone feel very seasick. There are some great restarants on the island.
We picked up the Samui Dining Guide when we got to the island and found some great places to eat in it (Betelnut, Upstairs and Budsaba)

It is worth renting a motor bike to explore further afield as a change to the beach and the local shops.
Best restaurants visited - other than at the hotel - Betelnut, Poppies and good value for money, the Islander.

Koh Samui is becoming far too commercial. I do not travel to "exotic" locations to eat Burger King, McDonalds, and Pizza Hut, to drink StarBucks coffeee, or to Shop at Nautica and Addidas stores.

I found Koh Samui to be much less than what I'd envisioned. For beaches, ambience, and better weather, Id rather stick to Thailands West Coast, in places such as Phuket or Krabi.

Didnt really care for Koh Samui. Lots of traffic constantly encircling the island on narrow roads. Not recommended for bicycling, nor for walking, as not only sidewalks, but shoulders, are lacking. Didnt care for the gentle seas nor the thin strips they call beaches.

Koh Samui has all the ingredients for a great family holiday - great beaches, tranquil resorts, lively evening entertainment for all ages and great value restaurants - especially Italian if this takes your fancy! It's a bit of a shoppers paradise too - especialy for high quality tailored cloths & eye glasses which we only buy form here now - more than 50% cheaper than Europe.

Koh Samui is a nice beach resort with decent shopping area and night life. It is far from a deserted island, but it has protected its beautiful natural scenery. For instance, you won't find many fat Germans looking for a young Thai girl like in Phuket and Pattaya. Beautiful tropical style airport. Excellent tourist service throughout. Highly advisable destination for a relaxed beach oriented holiday. Nice young crowd and at 20 min. From the best fool moon party in the world.

I'd recommend renting a motorbike to get around the island (for about $800 Baht/week). The taxis are readily available, but beware that the prices go up as the night progresses. Everything is negotiable just about, but the merchants (in Chaweng) are less affable than those in Bangkok and Chiangmai because they have less sales competition. Everything is quite close & within minutes of the bungalow. Chaweng beach is very touristy, but if that's what you're looking for...then it's great. Otherwise, I'd suggest trying the other beaches which are not so crowded and have much to offer.

The food was excellent everywhere we ate, particularly Peace Bungalow, and Big John's seafood. Jeep hire was cheap and a good way to get around the island.

The destination was ideal with beautiful grounds and the look of the hotel was out of this world. We only took one tour (elephant trekking) but this was well organised and of a reasonable price, and the people at the safari were brilliant.
