Stayed at Central Samui Beach Resort - Samui, Thailand.

Samui is a touristy resort. I'd recommend Chaweng to anyone going with kids, any women travelling on their own, or couples. We went to Lamai beach for a day trip -it's strictly for men looking for some Thai 'company', and the beaches are not as fine as in Chaweng, the sand is far more gravelly, and the views not quite as stunning.

Koh Samui in general is a nice island for a tropical vacation, although the locals seem to be rather jaded in comparison with mainland Thais. The Yacht Club is on a very secluded beach, which means that it is difficult to get from there to anywhere else without prior arrangement. They offer a free shuttle to Chaweng beach everyday at noon, but it takes 200 baht to get back to the hotel in a taxi.

Recommended restaurants: Chef Chom's at Tongsay Bay and many seafood places along the beach, far away from the street noise of Chaweng.
Recommended: Rent a Jeep at 800 baht a day and discover yourself...

I highly recommend Panviman restaurant on Chaweng Beach. The best food we had in Thailand.

Very good for a few days, plenty of bars and good restaurants and very inexpensive. A private tour by car is also a good idea. The all-day trip to the waterfall, Big Buddha etc also worth taking, but not if you have a bad back as it is a very bumpy ride in a 4x4.

Stayed at Coral Cove Chalet - Samui, Thailand.

Destination between Lamai and Chaweng beach.
Hotel has own beach which you also can use for snorkelling.
In that case not too loud. In the evening, if you don't have any vehicle you are dependant to songthaew or taxi.

Koh Samui was very nice - the beaches are beautiful and the people are friendly. We ended up taking the Sangthaws between Chaweng Lamai and our hotel, they proved to be quite cheap though I think that they could have been cheaper if I had better bargaining skills!

Stayed at Papillon Resort - Samui, Thailand.

Got around the place using moped taxis - a lot cheaper and the price seems consistent. We went to a beach side Italian restaurant - Olivios' I think - excellent pasta if you are fed up of rice.
