It's good to rent a motorbike for some days (150B/day). Ideal way to explore this beautiful island. Bophut beach is in the north of Samui (quiter part of the island), and not really far away from Chaweng (touristic part) by tuk tuk or motorbike.

Koh Samui is a wonderful place to visit! We went elephant trekking, sea kayaking, snorelling...etc. Even took a Thai cooking class! It was very well relaxing, but at the same time, we were never bored as there was always something to do. The taxi was our main method of transportation.
Though we were there for about 6 days, we didn't visit Lamai. Chaweng, the busier area of Koh Samui, offered a wide array of restaurants, bars, shops, lounges. I recommend the Drop In restaurant on the main road close to Starbucks, the Green Mango for dancing, and the Nan Bar for a relaxing night on the beach star-gazing!

We took private taxi and hotel shuttle to get around. The cost was reasonable.

Koh Samui was not really for us, we just didn't quite feel comfortable there. We ended up leaving and going to Hua Hin instead which was just perfect, it also bought to our attention just how much more everything in Koh Samui costs. We stayed in a stunning 5-star hotel in Hua Hin for only a tiny bit more than we had paid for a 3 star hotel in Koh Samui!

Koh Samui is very much a 'quieter' beach resort from, say, Phuket but has everything to offer the traveller. Get off the island on kayaking and/or snorkelling trips and you'll gain more from your trip.
Lamai Beach was certainly more quiet than Chaweng but the shopping wasn't nearly as good as Chaweng.
Thailand must remain in everyone's top 3 holiday destinations in the world - it has something for everybody. Don't miss it.

Koh Samui is a great island. It is pretty easy to get around, tuk-tuks (taxi) drive by the hotels often. We stayed on Bophut beach which is quieter than some of the others. We spent one afternoon & evening at the Big Buddha and Chaweng Beach for shopping and dinner. The airport on Koh Samui is beautiful and well run. We can't wait to go back.

As above, though remote the YC is well served by songathaews to both Lamai and Chaweng. There's a great, budget Thai restaurant within 500yards called Apples where the food is cheap and good and the staff very friendly.
