Koh Samui was beautiful. Awesome landscape, great snorkelling on the nearby islands. Lots of nice restaurants in Chaweng and Lamai.
Don't hire a motorbike unless you already know how to ride. Too many tourists with bloodied knees and elbows - it will ruin your holiday.

All the posted information on Koh Samui seems pretty valid. The so-called 'meter' taxis do not use the meter, naturally. We were staying at Chaweng Beach to attend an event at the Meridien, on the other side of the island at Taling Ngam. The taxi we scored from Chaweng Beach Road hit us for THB 550 for the ride. That turned out to be quite reasonable given the experiences of others taking the same ride. Still, at the end of the fast and furious drive I could hardly begrudge the fare. Organising a van from the Meridien on the way back was much more economical. Within the Chaweng beach area, fares for the red pickup trucks seemed consistent.

We took a tour for 1700 Baht per person. This included an hour of snorkelling, a short hike/climb to the Innerlake, lunch, sea kayaking, and time to lay on the beach. There was also an option to hike/climb to some caves. However, the climb was up an extremely steep, muddy and rocky hill and none of us were wearing appropriate shoes. The guides were friendly, but they provided very little explanation, directions, or overview of the day. Safety procedures were never reviewed, which was par for the course of most of our time in Southeast asia!

Good destination for a quiet lazy holiday. Locals are very friendly. Good value for money though you need to barter when shopping (especially on the beach). Mostly used taxis to get around (covered utes with benches). Harder to get a taxi at a reasonable cost out to the quieter spots. Elephant trekking was disappointing - too short. Some excellent restaurants, recommend using the free "Samui Dining Guide".

A lovely island. Plan to rent a vehicle or some form of transportation to get around. It wasn't until I left the walking distance of the hotel, did I feel like I had arrived someplace special. The small villages and secluded beaches are out there to be discovered. Rode elephants, saw monkeys and waterfalls. Spent most of the time just looking around at the culture and tried to get a feel for the flavor of the people.
Never made it to a fancy restaurant. Preferred the local shanties along the beachfront. Little mom and pop places with no names, but great people and great food - cheap. Tried hard not to be a tourist, expecting anything. There's a Starbucks, but I never found the urge - surprised myself actually. A nice Italian place behind Starbucks to the left. You can make International calls over there as well.
I rented a jeep, not a moped/scooter. Much safer and more fun when it rains suddenly. Lastly, I would recommend scheduling a trip to the National Island reserve for kayaking and snorkelling. This will take up a whole day, but they don't go to this island everyday so you must plan ahead. Your budget should include taxes, there are taxes on everything and service charges as well. Add 20% to your expendures.
I wouldn't recommend this island for young children, they would get bored I think and at night the girls come out to play. Not your ideal family destination. Adults have no problems here, and if your not interested just say: No thank you. Worked everytime. Full Moon Party is a must do. Cheers!

Unless you hire a bike or jeep it is surprisingly difficult to get around. The hotel shuttle bus stops at 5:30 in the evening so getting to and from the hotel can be a bit of a problem. Airport transfers are relatively expensive when compared to taxis in Bangkok and the hotel transfer is the most expensive!!!
Lots of bars and resturants in Lamai. If you like to be catered for with organised tours then this is the place. If you want to do it yourself then hire a boat or a jeep. Nothing is too difficult.

A great island to visit during your Thailand trip. Koh Samui, although touristy, still has a vast number of quiet and pristine places to see.

Nice place with affordable price. A good place for relax, for fun, sea sports and diving (Koh Tao), and for good affordable seafood.
