If you stay at Ambassador Hotel, Cabbages and Condoms restaurant is just a 5 -10 min across the road. Very pleasant dining experience. Good food and ambience at affordable prices.

It is about 20-30 min walk to the World Trade Center/Siam Center from the hotel. If you need to get a cab, flag metered ones on the streets and be sure to get the meter running before driver moves off.
It would have cost us THB 250 if you get a cab from the hotel to Sukhumvit but it only cost us THB 70 with metered Taxi.

We spent 2 days in Bangkok in order to do some shopping and then travelled to Hua Hin where we stayed at the Sofitel Central Village. The Sofitel resort is a lovely British, colonial style resort, situated on the beach. While the beach is not idyllic, the pools and the facilities at the Sofitel are large, expansive and a lovely place to have a resort style holiday The Central Village is next door to the Sofitel and you can use all of the facilities of the main hotel, as well as eat breakfast there.
There are lots of restaurants within walking distance of the hotel and the usual abundance of spa's and massage outlets. I would avoid the horses on the beach as they are typical trail horses that have minds of their own-certainly not recommended for children.

Stayed at Asia Airport Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.

Excellent location for shopping, partying, and eating. It's also conveniently located near a skytrain terminal for sightseeing. I recommend eating at Cabagges and Condoms, a two block walk from the hotel. I welcome any questions from people planning on staying at the Ambassador.

On your first day, rent a moped for the entire stay. You can get from place to place easily, since Ko Samui is basically one main strip with resorts scattered throughout. Take a day trip to see the island's attractions...although the alligator / monkey shows were a bit grim for my taste. But the people who take you make up for it with their "mai pen rai" attitude ("nevermind" in Thai) and open smiles.
Eat as much food as you can...Thai, Italian, and I had the best steak and caesar salad I've ever tried in Asia. The vendors were less aggressive here than they were in Phuket. It's amazing what you can get for your dollar...we couldn't even spend all the money we brought! I had a few hours in an upscale spa...where I tipped the girl way more than needed, simply because she made me feel something beyond "relaxed".
Take the time to venture into the alleyways that shoot off from the main strip..it's where the more interesting shopping (and personalities) are. There's also a Boots Pharmacy, where you can easily stock your bathroom for the next year for under $50...everything you ever saw in a Western pharmacy / drugstore. Bring extra luggage, because you will buy every gift you ever needed. Finally, don't forget to save $15 per person for the departure tax the day you leave. Lots of surprised people in that line-up!

I used the Taxi-meter from the Phuket airport. It's much cheaper than using the service at the airport counter. We went for land tour (book a taxi) for sightseeing and shopping. Remember to always bargain the price even though it has a price tag on it. We learnt pretty hard way in our first day. Shopping at Muslim fisherman village (recomended by the tour guide) near the James Bond Island was the best deal, however.
We bought Thai Silk about 1/3-1/4 of their opening price. We booked two tours to Phi-Phi, Maya, Khai islands and James bond island. We went to Patong Beach at night using Tuk-Tuk from our place (again, have to really bargain the fare). There are many tuk-tuk around, so don't rush and you'll get the best deal. Near our hotel, there are some nice seafood restaurants. One of them is owned by German (can't remember the restaurant name). The food is superb and cheap. Finally, one slight negative experience was when we went to nearby shop to buy souvenir and saw that the shop attendant tried to short the changes. Please always count the money given to them and importantly the changes. Have a great and enjoyable trip !

A five minute walk from the hotel will find you at the beginning of the main shopping scene. Great spas all over the island. A must is a Thai meal at Poppies.

If you are a golfer shop around for greenfees and never go straight to the golf club as this is the most expensive choise. Example Palm Resort charges Baht 1800 but I bought it for Baht 1400 at a travel agency in the Bookazine shop. If you want a break from Thai and sea food, visit Brasserie de Paris which is very good with excellent service at reasonable prices.

The Grand Palace, Reclining Buddha, Flower Market, Malls, Local Night Life, River Tours, and more are very accessible by taking the inexpensive skytrain and taxicabs although with taxis you need to be certain of how they are metering as with anywhere else. Walking works very well in the city just prepare for the sweat. Water taxis are great for traveling longer distances to places such as the Grand Palace and Temple of the Reclining Buddha (has to be seen - this thing is huge!) just don't fall in!
