Stayed at Montien Hotel Pattaya - Pattaya, Thailand.

Location is superb next to beach. Walk along the road for 10-15 mins to city centre. The children enjoyed the 'Ripley's believe it or Not' in Royal Garden Plaza Mall (10 mins walk away or 2 mins by 'minibus' from Montien). Internet, 24 hrs supermarkets and restaurants all within 5-10 mins walk.

Siam Square is just a few minutes away which is perfect if you are looking for huge department stores and western restaurants/fast food etc. The Skytrain connection to the hotel is an excellent facility - I particularly recommend using it to go to the Chatuchak weekend market on Saturdays and Sundays. The market is enormous and very colourful and very Thai indeed and it is nice to be able to get the Skytrain there, immerse yourself in the madness for a few hours and then get the Skytrain back to your nice air-conditioned room to have a shower!

Jim Thompson's house is a short walk away and is well worth a visit. To eat, I recommend the seafood market at Phrom Penh skytrain station near the Emporium. It's like a market where you choose your seafood and vegetables and then it's cooked to your liking - fantastic!

MBK is a great place to shop, Suan Lum Night Bazaar is definitely a better place to shop than Patphong as shop owners are less pushy. Chatuchak is always a weekend favourite.

Stayed at Coral Bay Resort - Samui, Thailand.
|
We lined up some tours through the hotel. They were fun. Plenty of great restaurants on the beach, our favorites were Budsoba, Iyata, and Baan Thai. Didn't have a bad meal in Thailand...except KFC at BKK!!

Stayed at Amari Coral Beach Resort - Phuket, Thailand.

I liked Patong. We went jet skiing and parasailing, which were fun. The food is good and pretty cheap, there are lots of places to shop, plenty of party destinations, although a lot of the girls you will meet at these clubs are trying to get paid. My friend went golfing, which he said was tough given the heat and humidity in late August. You can get very cheap DVDs at the local shops for about 100 baht ($2.50US each).

Stayed at Tamarind Village, Chiang Mai - Chiang Mai, Thailand.

I had delicious fish tacos at the Salsa Kitchen (part of the Bagel Kitchen) in the old city. The old city is very pleasant for walking in the early morning and the evening, but traffic during the day is pretty bad, and forget going outside the old city on foot. Although the guidebooks say there is no bus service, there is in fact a #10 air conditioned bus which runs around town and goes to the very interesting
Central Airport Plaza shopping mall. Nancy Chandler's Map of Chiang Mai shows the bus route and everything else worth seeing in Chiang Mai - it's well worth the purchase price.

Don't be afraid to try the food stalls, or even restaurants with menus only in Thai. Often, these are illustrated, and one need only point!

Hotel is close to the Foodland supermarket on Soi 5 for inexpensive food, open 24 hrs/day. Also, across from Foodland - the Amari Hotel, which has a very nice buffet lunch for US $9.

Stayed at Regency Hotel, Hatyai - Hat Yai, Thailand.
|
I visited Hat Yai for a conference on International Collaboration on Education, so I was not able to visit the beach or other scenic spots. However, I did get to eat in two or three pleasant and cheap seafood restaurants - all close to the hotel and with a nice variety of dishes. There were many facilities for Muslim visitors and the city itself was very internationalised. More about my experiences here: www.suite101.com/article.cfm/18175/110648
