Stayed at D'Ma Pavilion Hotel Bangkok - Bangkok, Thailand.

A new subway opened in Bangkok in mid-July which will offer another alternative to the renowned auto traffic jams that occur at all hours of the day and night. The skytrain is also very good but not very extensive in coverage of the city. I always go to Jim Thompson's silk store just to look at the wonderfully high quality goods, but they are very expensive and one can get high quality goods at hundreds of other shops including my favorite which is just around the corner on Suriwong road, Silk of Siam. Jim thompson's also has a very reasonably priced cafe where one can get both Thai and western food. The key to shopping in BKK is to bargain and be careful about wanting soemthing too much. Be prepared to walk away if your price is not accepted, you will then find out if you have undercut the seller's cost or not. You will often hear, "wait a minute, how about..." or your offer may be accepted.

Stayed at Pathumwan Princess - Bangkok, Thailand.

From Bangkok it's easy to go to Hua Hin for a few days. Take a taxi to the Southern bus station and an air-conditioned bus from there is only 128 bt and takes about 3 hours.(about 200km) They go every half hour. They even have an attendant who brings around free bottled water! Hua Hin is a pleasant beachside town with good shopping and seafood.

Stayed at Asia Bangkok Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
|
At the heart of the shopping mall with the convenience of skytrain right in front of the hotel. MBK is just a stop away. Take a taxi (about 20 mins) to this place called Weekend Market - ask the taxi driver to bring you there it is only opens on Sat/Sun 9am to 6pm. Be there at 9am to grab all the good buys. You can shop everything there except electronic goods. You can find branded stuff there too. Do not miss this place! DIE DIE MUST GO!

Recommend going to the Chokchai steakhouse for dinner. It's only a 15-20minute walk from the hotel and has great food, especially if you are craving a steak.

Stayed at Impiana Resort Samui - Samui, Thailand.
|
There is a good beach restaurant for lunch and dinner next to Impiana. Especially Baan Ma-Praw is highly recommended. The beach is nice but nothing special; it is relative narrow and gets very crowded close to the hotel.

Stayed at Tamarind Village, Chiang Mai - Chiang Mai, Thailand.
|
Chiang Mai was a welcome relief from the incredible "busyness" of Bangkok. We use a Tuk Tuk to see the sites around the city including jewelrey shopping at 100 B for a whole morning. The night market has lots of local items inc silver and gems plus the usual t-shirts etc. A highlight was the Zoo where they have a Panda house. There were only a few people there and the Pandas were out playing. It was quite and experience. We are definately returning to Northern Thailand.

Stayed at Pinnacle Hotel Lumpinee - Bangkok, Thailand.
|
Close to Bangkok Night Bazaar (about 5 minutes walk) which has shops, music and food and is a great place to visit in the evening. Also very close to the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium if you wish to experience Muang Thai. An excellent restaurant called Mali is only 5 minutes walk from the hotel.
