The Handspan tour to the Perfume Pagoda was a definite highlight and worth the money. Just take your sunscreen and lots of water! The boat ride portion was spectacularly beautiful.

Halong Bay is a must, better to sleep on the boat overnite, but we weren't allowed, something about the police not allowing it.
Water Puppets in Hanoi, another must, and I wouldn't advise hiring a motorbike unless you are a really good rider. I still had big problems when you get to intersections, as there aren't many traffic lights, and you just mingle with the bikes going in opposite directions... and I have no trouble riding my 1100cc motorbike around Bangkok. Riding in Thailand is like paradise compared to riding in Vietnam.... GOOD LUCK.

Hanoi is a very charming city and the French influence is quite apparent. The restaurant and bar alongside Hoan Kiem lake is recommended for the excellent view and delightful food. I felt much safer here than in HCMC and was not averse to taking motorbike taxi rides which I wouldn't consider in HCMC.

Didn't have time this year. But on a previous visit used Queen's cafe to organise trip to the North West and to Ha Long bay. All arrangements worked fine. Accommodation and transport basic but adequate.

Close enough to the action to walk there if you wanted to, but far away from the action to get some peace and quiet.

We took a three day tour of Halong Bay and stayed on a 90 foot junk boat (we booked this thru Velo-Asia) I would rec. that to anyone going to Vietnam. Our kids loved it. I think you need the two days to get far enough from the main tourist area and the polluted water.
We also had ocean kayaks with us and did a lot of exploring in caves and wonderful beaches. We had a guide the whole time (Nguyen Xuan Nghia-"Dragon" greendragon36@hotmail.com). He made the trip for our family. He took us to his home outside of Hanoi and we meet his family and had tea. What an experience for our children.

Hanoi is great. Go now before it gets too Westernized -- money is flowing in and can be seen in the few new upscale restaurants and hotels along with new expressways and the like.
One of those restaurants is an amazing deal, very cheap (other "nice" places especially near the Metropole are really expensive for Hanoi and really kind of lame) but stunning food and design. It's right out of London or Tribeca. Wild Rice. Check it out.

Hanoi is just great. Rent a bycicle or a motobike and cruise around, not only in the Old Quarter - the Hoan Kiem District or the eastern part of town are recommendable.

Hanoi should not be missed. Colonial architecture, wonderful people.

Hanoi remains the last major city in Asia that is relatively unspoiled by modernity. It is my absolute favorite: great sights to see, wonderful people, superb food. And it is entirely walkable: rarely is it necessary to take a taxi (and when you do, they are plentiful and cheap).
