I went to Vietnam as a member of an Earthwatch expedition team. I found the people, country and project to be a wonderful experience. The people are very kind and curious about their visitors to their country. It was great!

The best resturant we tried was Season's. We also tried The Emperor and Indochine for dinner but found them to be of a lesser quality than Season's.

I stayed in Tam Dao for nine days, studying butterflies under the direction of a Vietnamese scientist. From there I joined a team in Cuc Phuong to collect data on the various tree species and their growing requirements. I returned to Hanoi and, through the Lucky, took a lovely one-day tour of the Perfume Pagoda. A two-day trip to Ha Long Bay was beautiful and the most pleasing way to wind down a strenuous journey. A massage at the Dan Cho hotel relaxed every possible area of tension. The visit to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum was awe-inspiring, and the Temple of Literature was an oasis of serenity. I took advantage of buses, minivans, boats, cyclos, motorbikes and motorized cyclos. The Dinh Lang Restaurant, only a couple of blocks away, was right on the lake, had fine service, delicious food and five musicians playing traditional instruments. The Cha Ca la Vong on 14 Pho Cha Ca offers the diner a different experience in good eating.

A great destination to sample Vietnamese and French cuisines. Many fun excursions around Hanoi to take. Most memorable part of this Vietnam trip was an excursion to Tam Coc - a 2-hour boat trip on a canal in the middle of rice paddies. I highly recommend this excursion to all travelers.

Hanoi is a beautiful city, a lot different to any of the other cities we visited in Vietnam. It has a real French colonial feel about it. As we only stayed here for a few days and the weather was so unbearably hot and it was the end of our trip in Vietnam, we didn't see much of the city, but what we did see from inside the taxi looked really nice.

Definitely check out Bobby Chinn restaurant at 1 Ba Trieu St, near the Opera House across from Hoan Kiem Lake. Food is top notch & ambience is hip & happening. Entertainment on Saturday nite was eclectic & excellent--rock & roll, modern Vietnamese music & singing & contemporary performance dance. The place to be seen in Hanoi.

Hanoi is a lovely place with wide boulevards in the French Quarter and hectic narrow lanes in the Old Quarter. A good starting point for visits to Vietnam, a much gentler introduction than HCMC. Much of the action in the evening is centred around the lake with many city dwellers simply spending time with family and friends. Many good eateries with all price ranges. Check out around the cathedral for good atmosphere bars\eats.

Smart-looking restaurants in this area aren't always any good. Some not only charge to take a credit card but also convert the amount into dollars at a very poor rate.

Hanoi is extremely charming and a contradiction that is quite peculiar. There are some beautiful grand buildings but also some very run-down shabby places - all which add to the appeal of the place. Plenty of art galleries for browsing and the shopping is not bad too, especially if you like lacquer. The Musuem of Fine Arts is good place to see the evolution of Vietnam and its society.

This is my first time at Vietnam and Hanoi. Spent 7 days 6 nights: 2 days at Hanoi, 2 days at Ha Long Bay and 1 day at Perfume Pagoda. Used Handspan for Ha Long Bay which include sleeping on boat. Perfume Pagoda is a 2-hour car ride, 1-hour mini boat down a stream and 1 hour mountain climbing to the biggest cave/temple (200-300m). Be prepared to sweat under the sun a lot. Overall Hanoi is interesting even for Asians like myself. It maintains its old charm and is surprisingly clean. It is a city of motorbikes, you have to learn how to cross the road by walking slowly, you can not afford to wait for the traffic to clear up. It is tourist friendly as major attractions has English descriptions and brochures. Since Dong is not common world currency, it is better to prepare USD and change to Dong there for better rate. Tried Brothers' Cafe (Vietnamese food) which is a restaurant set in an old Vietnamese house (similar to old chinese house), fantastic buffet at USD10. Also tried Cha Ca Va Long (at Old Quarter), a Hanoi grilled fish specialty which is an institution by itself. The taste is very vietnamese, might need some getting used to. Also tried the Shrimp Cake Restaurant at West Lake, looking at the crowd, you know it is popular with locals. It is set along the lake thus has a nice view. Also visited a wet market along Hai Ba Trong, closed to Hanoi Tower apartment. This is the market where you can find dog meat. Bought DVD movies Indochine (set in Ha Long Bay) and Cyclo. There is not a lot, shopping wise. If you take Vietnam Airlines, take the free Hanoi map at your seat, it is a very good map. Was told that year end is better time as it is cooler.
