Stayed at  Omni Saigon Hotel - Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam.
I can recommend the Hoavien Brauhaus at 28 Bis Mac Dinh St. Dist 1 HCMC for a good meal and good beer.

We visited the chi chu tunnels in saigon and also went on a three day tour of the mekong delta. Both trips we organised through delta tours (You'll find them in the packpacker area). They were an excellent outfit, excellent guides and very good value for money. I also had a traditional dress made in M & M silk (just a bit further down from the grand) $40 and was beautiful!

Ho Chi Minh City is a culture shock - three million motorcycles in one city and I think we saw all of them! And that was just on one roundabout! Plenty of great food and cheap bargains. Be aware that few cab drivers speak English - carry a street map or guidebook with you to show drivers your destintion's address. Cabs from the airport rip you off - should cost $US4 or 60,000 VND - try to agree before leaving, or expect minimum 100,000 dong charge. Also avoid cabs adjacent to bus stops, tour companies etc - they have meters which run four times as quickly as normal cabs. But most locals helpful, friendly and fair.

Indochine and Lemongrass are good restaurants. Lemongrass very close to the hotel.

Saigon was great. Typical SEA buzzing city. Reminiscent of BKK, though a bit behind. Traffic to be seen to be believed. Still recovering from cyclo ride. Ate very well. Mix of Vietnamese (Lemongrass) and French (Camargue). Very good value. Tour to Cu Chi tunnels highly recommended - though do not go down the deep tunnel unless fit and no problems at all with enclosed space, darkness and heat. CaoDai temple not really worth the time spent on the bus (better if we'd had longer there). Mekong delta trip was too short (we were very pushed for time). Delta Adventure Tours v good for what we wanted.

Go for some of the best noodle soups (pho) in town at Pho 2000. A busy and inexpensive place in the city center, which was also visited by former US president Bill Clinton several years ago.

P Regan 10 October 2003
Stayed at  Metropole Hotel, Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam.
If you go to the Metropole, there is a side street parallel to the main street that has some great cheap restaurants with English menus, and cheap laundry places as well.

Stayed at  Bong Sen Hotel - Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam.
A visit to the general post office is absolutely recommended. Try out the Hoi An and Mandarin restaurants. It's good food in a wonderful atmosphere. Of course everything comes at its price! Avoid the zoo and botanical gardens, it's a waste of time.

Stayed at  Empress Hotel Ho Chi Minh City - Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam.
We visited the Reunification Palace, War Museum, Chinatown, and the Ben Thanh market. We walked to most places exept Chinatown. At Ben Thanh, beware of coffee lady that sold us Vietnamese blue mountain coffee for $4/100 gms. The boxed coffee is sold at $1/250 gms. Other local coffee sell for $1/100 gms.

Taxis are cheap and reliable. Don't miss the Reunification Palace. We found the tour to the Cu Chi Tunnels and Coa Dai Temple really interesting and would thoroughly recommend them to anyone who visits Saigon. Go to the Continental Hotel for a great crepe suzette and don't forget the Roof Garden of the Rex Hotel for beer. Phuong Xu Restaurant is the best restaurant we tried in Vietnam. Wonderful food and Bill and Hilary ate there too!
