Vietnam: Saigon was amazing - the most capitalist city I've seen in a 'Communist' country! Hanoi very sedate by comparison but charming and arguably has the better shopping contrary to popular belief. Hoi-an is a must stay - relaxed historic town - get a new suit made for £25 there. Trips: any of the standard tours are recommended especially river trips for the scenery. ate local food off street stalls - was mostly great, but did pick up a tummy bug along the way! took internal flights to get around so can't comment on bus/train. Vietnamese invariably charming.

If you don't like crowds this is not the place for you! trying to cross the street is a major undertaking, but with a sense of adventure - an exciting city to visit. Fantastic restaurants, good shopping at markets and really interesting visits to Mekong Delta, Chi Chu tunnels etc. we were there during Tet festival so probably busier than usual.

T & A Silk for tailored outfits, Temple Club for lunch or dinner (great deserts downstairs, separate eatery), Bamboo Cafe by Bentan Market for refreshing and reasonable meals, Saigon Saigon Bar at Caravel Hotel for the great view of the city.

Give the beach at Vung Tau a miss - although conveniently located near HCMC, it is horribly polluted with crude oil. Although one can swim in one of the many hotel pools, one wonders about where the seafood served in the restaurants comes from.
The Mekong River cruise from Mytho is on the other hand, a highly pleasurably and recommendable experience.

Worthwhile to take in a trip of the Mekong Delta area, which we arranged through hotel (believe it was Saigon Tours).
Visited Reunification Palace and HCMC Museum which were both well worth seeing.
Internet access best at major dept. store.

Don't be superstitious: Have lunch at "Restaurant 13".
Vietnamese cuisine just around the corner at Ngo Duc Ke, friendly, busy, value for money.
Please don't compare it with La Fourchette next door, with their arrogant, inattentive staff, their canteen-style food and their rip-off prices. You order crepes, you get a rubbery pancake. Brrrr.

Saigon is a great city and well worth spending 3 to 4 days there. We had been warned about an increase in bag lefts etc but we saw nothing that caused us concern. A day trip to Cu Chi tunnels is good value but be cautious of the city tours on offer. Most places they take you to can be visited easily on foot within an afternoon and at a much cheaper cost. The War Remnants Museum is well worth a visit and the Reunification Palace although lacking in English translations/descriptions is an interesting place to spend an hour if you have time free. Good restaurants are: Maxim's opposite Grand Hotel with local food, classical music playing, quiet alcoves, excellent service or if you need a change of diet, Urvashi at 27D Hai Trieu has great Indian.

After visiting Hanoi, Halong Bay, Hue and Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) had only little to offer as to ancient buildings / culture. Trip to My Tho (Mekong Delta) was in vain and local guide was hopeless. Cu Chi tunnel trip was good thanks to our excellent guide from Ben Thanh Travel, a young man originally from Siem Riep, Cambodia. HCMC is good for shopping and eating, but do not expect much of culture.

Our stay in HCMC was a huge contrast to the slow lane of Hoi An. My wife revelled in the shopping opportunities and still complains of not having had enough time. We found the art particularly attractive and affordable in Vietnam, buying both in Hoi An and HCMC - the latter setting a new record for the family budget but was a piece we both instantly loved.
Our kids survived well, HCMC is a tough place for the little ones (aged 2 & 4) - but we did find the zoo much better than expected and was a green space that also seems to be much appreciated by the locals. We also took the boat trip in the Mekong delta which was fun, but be prepared for a very bumpy drive down there...you can understand why river travel is so favoured!
