Saigon is an excellent place to start a holiday in Vietnam. Travelling on open tour buses was a new experience seeing some wonderful scenery and meeting local and overseas travellers. Hoi An, Dalat and Mui Ne
where outstanding places to visit.
Can recommend shopping at Saigon Tourist Plaza in Ho Chi Minh.
Will certainly be visiting Vietnam again next year.

We went to Saigo, Hoi An and Hanoi. Hoi An was a graceful old town that made you feel like you had been transported back a few hundred years. We stayed in this old Chinese Trading house that had been converted into a hotel right in the middle of the old town. Michael Caine stayed there while filming the Quiet American. Beautiful rooms at the front of the hotel furnished with antiques and with a lovely balcony looking out onto the street. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Next to the hotel is the 17 saloon, with a great live band and an atmosphere hard to find somewhere else in Saigon.

Unless you want to ride through the crazy streets of Saigon on a peddled cab (of death), do not take your tour books out on the street. Though it is nice that EVERYONE wants to help you, saying no can become a bit annoying. If you have a free day, Saigon Water Park was fabulous, an experience like no other.

Veitnam is a very interesting country to visit. Althought still very much at the backpackers stage of travel. We as a family were a bit out of place. Mostly you will see backpackers and business men in Vietnam. Sites to visit would definitely be the Cu Chi Tunnels, Mekong Delta, as well as Halong Bay. Most of the travel books tell you that Hanoi is not really worth the visit but we really enjoyed it. It has a different flavour to it vs Ho Chi Minh in the south. Things to be leary of, is theft, the driving, and overall it is a great country but the people of Vietnam are still not that used to westerners and it almosts has an anti western feel to it. So basically if you are willing to enjoy there culture for the time that you are there, and expect to be charged considerable more for everything you buy, then you will be fine. Overall we are not sorry at all that we went it was a fabulous experience!!

We spent 4 full days in Saigon. If you are there just to see the Museums and temples 2 is plenty. However, if you want to relax and get a feel for the place 3-4 is ideal. One shopping tip, go to the Saigon Duty Free shop before you hit the tourist markets. The shops will sell all the same goods at about the same cost as Bihn Tay and everything is a fixed price. Also, if you plan to go to the beaches or other nearby destinations you should try to book a tour at least one day in advance (go to the Backpacker area for this) as most trips seemed to leave at 7:30-8:00 AM. Food in Ho Chi Minh was either average or excellent, we never had a bad meal. Good restauraunts and pubs are Liquid (Dance Club) 104 Hai Ba Trung ST. Dis 1; Lion Brewery (German) next to Caravelle hotel; Ice-Blue 54 Dong Khoi Str Dist 1; Cafe Havana (excellent cuban sandwich's) 25b Tran Cao Van St. District 1; Cafe Latin (Trendy Expat Place) 19 Dong Du St, Dist 1; Apocalypse Now (near Sheraton); City Cafe is good for people watching.
Suprisingly, Sunday night is a big night out so don't leave too early.

There are several places for live music in the night , but you should go to the spanish bar "Carmen". This place is for me one of the best in this city. But be there at 8.30pm,cuz after this time it is difficult to come in , cuz it is mostly full after this time.

Don't take the taxi parked on Le Lai St. next to the hotel lobby. They start at 6000D (which regular taxi starts at 12000D) but their meter jumps almost every 5 seconds. I think they did something to make the meter jump faster. So just take the taxi in front of the lobby is better.
Also, if you want to join local tour, go to Pham Ngu Lao st just south of the hotel. There are thousands of travel agent but cheap tour. A Mekong Delta 1day tour is only US$7 and Cuchi tunnel 1 day tour is US$4. The travel agent at the airport cost US$60 and US$30 for the same thing!

Vietnam is a wonderful country to visit, but one must be careful in Ho Chi Mihn City. I met the most dishonest street "guides" here and it's best to only take metered taxis if you need transport beyond walking. A metered taxi should cost about $3-4 USD from the airport to downtown and $2 to the Novotel. When you get out of the airport, you have to beat off the unofficial drivers begging for a ride to get to the metered taxi area that generally come unsolicited. If it's not metered, they have a tendency to change the price once you arrive or drastically over inflate the initial fee.
