Taxi rides were cheap and always metered. Although our guide books warned us of rip offs with taxi drivers and other things in general, we never encountered these experiences. The Vietnamese people were delightful on every occasion.
Loved the Cholon and Ben Thanh markets.

It takes 20 min from the airport at USD 3. The Don khoi street which is main shopping street is accessible by foot in 5 min. Super maket is next to the hotel so that you could get something easily.

For lunch, no place could be better and cheaper than the Binh Thanh Market just right across the street from the Hotel.

I had liposuction in Ho Chi Minh City! A lady dentist friend of mine living in Saigon recommended me to a plastic surgeon to whom she was also having the same surgery. I paid $1,000. The experience was frightening. But so far I am okay, able to travel to Danang, to the Faruma Beach Resort Hotel. This hotel is beautiful and the beach is quite stunning from the balcony of my room. Although it was overcast the day I was there. I only stayed for one night. They have a free shuttle bus taking you to 4 different sight seeing destinations. One is Hoi An.
I had a lot of clothes made there. The quality of the material is not good, but the workmanship is excellent at Trinh 95 on 95 Phan Chu Trinh - Hoi An. I brought a dress that I love and couldn't find another like it. Well, they made the exact replica of my dress. The only problem was the dress didn't feel same cause the material was not same. So I suggest if you are having clothes made...bring your own material.
You can buy an airline ticket for about $100 round trip. If you wish to visit Hanoi and other places while visiting Ho Chi Minh City. It's only an hour away by air. I have been to Vietnam twice in the past 2 years and one thing I always needed was another suitcase to carry all my gifts. The quality of the bags there are cheap and will tear by the end of the day. So don't forget to bring along a good duffle bag big enough to hold all your gifts. If you are staying at the New World Hotel, they will furnish an empty box and some tape for you. No problem.

Most of the Taxi drivers in front of the BONG SEN still overcharge you by at least 100 %! Don't take a taxi there, just walk a few meters around the block. For cheap food go to PHAM NGU LAO. In this backpacker area you can find a lot of good and cheap restaurants.

I have had wonderful meals in HCMC at the Camargue (a lovely French restaurant on the terrace of an old French house) and at Mandarine, an exquisite Vietnamese restaurant. I have also eaten cheaply and well in the city, where it is difficult to have a bad meal.

From the hotel, my wife and I basically did a lot of walking. The main tourist areas in Saigon are easily accessible by foot, but if you get tired, hop on a scooter if you're not too nervous. The scooters were actually quite safe in Saigon, as we didn't find the drivers to go very fast, and they were cheap, cheaper than the cyclo...stay away from some of these guys. Agree to a price and go. We usually paid about 30000Dong/person (about $2US) for a ride anywhere, when we got tired of the walking.

Only a 10-15 minute walk from the hotel is the backpackers' quarter. There one can find offices which offer everything from a day trip trip to the Mekong delta to bus tickets to many destinations. It's definitely time and trouble saving to book there even if one usually avoids "organized" stuff.

Beware of rip-off taxi drivers outside war-memorial site, go for cabs owned by a registed company with name stated on the taxi - usually these are newer taxis.

To see the city you must take a tour with a Cyclo rider (a bike with a passenger seat on the front). It's just the best way to see the real city. I came across a guy called Teo who has been doing the job for 22 years & is just excellent. He'll show you anything you want to see & will take you for food/coffee/beer where the locals go - much better than a taxi! You can find him at a noodle bar (ask one of the waitresses) called Noodle 2000 (or something very similar - it's on the first roundabout on the way to downtown HCMC).
A couple of other tips: 1) go to the War museum (it's very biased against the Americans but a sobering advert against war). 2)Get out of the city on a tour or two (Mekhong Delta is excellent) but don't be shy to ask how much a tour will cost.
