Hue was the highlight of my Vietnam trip. Lovely little city... busy, but not too busy. The UNESCO World Heritage sites are wonderful. The boat trip up the Perfume river to view the Tombs of the emperors and the Thien Mu Temple is a must. Cyclos are a good way to get around town.

So, nothing to visit, or at least the hotel staff would not tell me! The place is at around one hour drive from Danang airport and it costs you 50$ (US) to get there and the same to get away! This really should be pointed out because that was a very bad surprise! ... I could go on and on whith the bad stuff but I think it is enough!

Very Hot every day during our stay. Would recommend at least a three day stay to allow for some relaxation as well as sightseeing. Limited number of restaurants, western quality, available. Must see Tombs are Minh Mang, Tu Duc and Khai Dinh. River tour well worth while. Citadel has only a few buildings remaining but the perimeter wall is still intact. The One Dollar Restaurant in the Morin Hotel is good value but strangely enough is empty.

Take one of the boat tours down the Perfume River, visiting the many tombs and pagodas along the way, some quite spectacular. Citadel of considerable historical interest, with some excellent restoration work under way. Good jumping off point for bus tours (a long day) to the DMZ and Khe Sanh.

Hue has only the historic sites to offer. The town itself is not attractive. Beware of the Cyclo-drivers. Most of them are dishonest. Better rent a taxi to the important sites which is reliable and of good value.

Beach is nice but pollution starts to get a problem at the southern end. As foreigner you will be quite an attraction to local kids which can get bothering from time to time.

Hue itself is unremarkable but has some worthwhile sights. The citadel is very interesting although only slowly being restored. A trip on the river to the royal mausoleums makes a good day out. We hired a car to go to Hoi An for the day, stopping at the Marble mountains, China Beach etc. Not cheap but an interesting way to see more of the countryside in Vietnam.

Lang Co is potentially a wonderful place where the river meets the sea, however infrastructure is not yet set-up to international standards. The beach is covered in rubbish debris washed in from the sea, the villages still use the beach as a public toilet and most of the surroundings (ie roads, resort entrance) are under contruction, so there is dust and noise of jack-hammering and trucks.
I would highly recommend that you stay anywhere in Hoi An, rather than here.

Hue is a small town where there's not much to do once you've taken the boat tour of the imperial tombs and pagodas. Hard to see how you could spend more than a couple of hours at what's left of the imperial city. But the food is terrific. We ate better in Hue than we did anywhere else, and probably for less. We particularly reccomend Lac Thanh. Fodor's calls it a dive and it looks like one but the food is awesome. And the owner is great.
