If you're looking for shopping, nightlife and a vibrant city, don't come to Mui Ne. But if you're looking for a quiet retreat in a beautiful setting, this is your paradise! This is probably the nicest beach in Vietnam, barring possibly the Phu Quoc Islands.
The biggest downside to Mui Ne, other than being isolated (which is kind of the idea), is transportation. Unless you take the relatively cheap open bus, plan on paying about $60 each was for a car to drive you to Mui Ne from HMC.

Lacking of local transport (taxi, cyclo..) is the worst thing at Muine. You are trapped to the area.

Absolutely fantastic. The only place in Vietnam where we weren't hounded by touts. In three days not one person tried to sell me anything while I sat on the beach. I've been to a lot of places and in terms of sand quality, peacefullness, and natural beauty this ranks as one of the best beaches in the world. Be sure to check out the fishing village also.

Pretty limited area. Lots of European tour groups. Not a first choice for Vietnam.

Phan Thiet is still developing but close by is Mui Ne which is more touristy and where you will find more restaurants, hotels etc. Phan Thiet is still limited and dinners would usually be confined to the hotel unless you make a trip to Mui Ne about 10km away. We took an excursion to the Sand Dunes, Temple, Fairy Stream but as far as excursions go that was really it.
In addition the beach at Mui Ne seemed better than Phan Thiet. One restaurant in Mui Ne that I would recommend is "Good Morning Vietnam" (they have other branches in Saigon, Hanoi & Nha Trang).

After a long travel and an exciting bus trip from Ho Chi Minh City!, we found Mui Ne very relaxing! What a beach! - with exotic surroundings. The food was great, all over! The Bamboo Village restaurant has a wonderful location and serves good food, as well as the small family restaurants at the beach or by the main street.
Scooter trip is mandatory. The sand dunes were also a must. Exiting and embracing Vietnam!

Phan Thiet is a small town whose primary industry is fishing. Generally we stayed at the resort during our short stay, but we took the hotel bicycles into town one day to visit the market and the harbour. This was definitely worth a look as there were many weird and wonderful things to see.
