In Hoi An (Vietnam), you will need to develop a thick skin, as you will be approched by hundreds of locals asking you into their mothers/sisters/uncles/etc fabric shop. They will invariably comment on how handsome or beautiful you are. This attention can be very annoying at first, but eventually you will learn how to handle it, and start to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. If you are looking for a good tailor in Hoi An, I recommend Mr. Xe (71 Nguyen Thai Hoc St, Hoi An). Tell him that David and Lisa sent you. We actually met Mr. Xe in the departure lounge at HCMC airport when we first got to Vietnam. He is a very funny man and will always ask "how's it hanging". We went to other tailors in Hoi An, but now wish we bought all our clothes from Mr. Xe. Mr. Xe's staff are very efficient and his prices are very reasonable. Mr. Xe will not let you take the clothes until you are 100% happy with them and he is satisfied with the quality.

We were here in Feb 03 and there appears to be a large increase in restaurants. Miss Ly's still the best standard Resto in town. Brothers Cafe excellent for the special meal. Wandering at night is terrific and more comfortable than the heat of the day. The central market is an intense and sensory experience. It has a certain ambience not present in others in Vietnam.

Hoi an and My Son were disappointing and I would not recommend visiting with anything other than modest expectations. Many of the old buildings in Hoi An are unimpressive and seem to be little more than a front by which the people who work there lure you into their tacky tourist-tat shop at the back. In between are row upon row of second rate tourist shops with people hassling you to visit. The river is dirty - which is a real turn off as most of the restaurants overlook this creek. My Son is a trek to reach - and then the ruins are diminutive and in poor condition. They do not compare at all to Bagan in Burma, or any of the similar sights in Thailand or Sri Lanka. These are easily the most disappointing World Heritage Sites I have ever visited.

We only had time for Hoi An or Hue, not both. In hindsight, Hue might have been more attractive with its historical offerings. The number of Hoi An tailor shops has apparently grown from just a few to over 300 in recent years and the whole 'custom-made clothing' experience seems to border on the tacky. It's also very time-consuming and can be done in larger cities if you have more time there. Now somewhat regretting missing Hue's history. If you're flying out of Danang, do check out the Danang's Cham Museum--about an hour is all you'll need.

Unfortunately, Hoi An is rapidly being spoilt by tourism so get there fast! Their system of tickets to visit various sites is not well done since it does not give you enough choice. For instance, to visit certain houses, you need to buy a complete ticket all over again which means you pay again to visit the museums, which really do not merit 2 visits. It is a ripoff.

Hoi An is not to be missed, while My Son is by far overestimated: much more interesting is the Cham museum in Danang.

We didn't get out much in Hoi An it was a winding down time from having traveled for over 6 weeks. The facility made getting into town with a shuttle with many leaving and picking up times.

Hoi An is a wonderful town. Very friendly local people, decent food and the best selection of local art anywhere in Vietnam (far superior to Hanoi and Saigon).

Renting a motorbike here is a great way to get around -- a good primer for Saigon. Police now require motorcycle driver licenses -- never used to. Renting them from hotels usually gets you better equipment (higher costs -- $7 day) but not here. Rather than adding to their overhead buying motos, they get them from local people -- gas gauge didn't work at all, the horn barely, idled too low, etc. look elsewhere to see if bikes are in better shape.

Hoi An is a wonderful city. We had lots of clothes made by a local tailor.
