Stayed at Datai Langkawi, The - Langkawi, Malaysia.

To be frank, the only reason I go to Langkawi Island is to stay at The Datai Langkawi. I have explored the island several times, but it's not very interesting, and not even very beautiful. The beaches in some of the islands in Thailand are far better. The beach at Datai Bay is quite nice, however.

The hotel is well-placed for a visit to Langkawi as it is in the quieter half of the island. The hotel can arrange a number of tours, however we hired a car & got around independently. The views from the new cable car are spectaclar &, even on a public holiday, we did not have to wait long to go up.
We would definitely recommend the mangrove trip. We tried to go to a couple of the waterfalls but were prevented by either fallen trees blocking the path or maintainance work being undertaken on the trails.

Staying at the Datai was a full holiday in itself. The resort setting amidst the rainforest is a refreshing change to many beach-front resorts (at the same time maintaining its proximity to the beach).

Langkawai was very quite when we went as there was a lot of concern over SARS. We only travelled around the isalnd, but there is not too much to see on the island. I reccommend going island hopping ad geting to see some of the other island in the area.

Langkawi is the perfect tropical island. Plenty to do if you wish but good beaches to do nothing on if you wish. No hassle from hawkers that I found. Long may it continue!!!

Langkawi is a lovely island although the beach and the water are not the best in Malaysia. Best way to see it is to hire motorbikes and explore, can also find nicer beaches than Pantai Cenang this way. For nightlife, the Reggae bar on Pantai Cenang is the best bet. Malaysian restaurant part of Sunvillage in a fantastic place and the Thai in the Pelangi Beach resort is also very good.

Langkawi is not that exciting besides offering its nature. That is why it is imporant to have a nice and comfortable resort instead in order to feel completely satisfied.

There were lots of things to do like different watersports at the beach. We also visited the mangrove-forest and saw many animals like eagles and bats. We took a trip in the jungel and swam in cool spring under a waterfall. We did a lot of shopping in the city and the taxi was cheap. We also rented a car and the only problem we had was to get used to driving a car on the left side.

Very chilled out island, which has not been spoilt by commercialism.
