Stayed at Beach Garden Resort - Langkawi, Malaysia.

The Pulau Payar snorkelling trip was rather disappointing. There were little corals and substantially less than what was advertised. Visitors were confined to a small stretch along the beach. On the Saturday, when tourist arrival was peak, it was so crowded at the eating area and at the beach itself!!!

After a busy 2 weeks of travelling we just wanted a place to unwind so had little interest in tours. However the tours offered were not especially attractive to us. Did not have a suitable bike for our child.

We cycled with a guide through beautiful countryside to a waterfall - taking in rice fields, water buffalo and monkeys along the way. A wonderful if sweaty experience for the fairly fit involving about 9k of cycling and 10-15 mins of climbing up slippery rocks and scrambling over tree roots to get to the waterfall where we stripped down to our bathing suits & swam in the icy rock pool - an unforgettable day!
There's a night market, duty-free shopping centre & various places selling arts & crafts - but we found the activities offered at Tanjung Rhu Resort - Mangrove tours, sailing, cycling, windsurfing, archery and many others - enough to keep us happily occupied for 5 days.

The hotel is located in Pantai Cenang, south-west of the island where is the busiest beach of the island. There are many resorts and hotels and you will find it is easy to rent a car or motocycle. I would recommend the Chinese seafood restaurant near the hotel and a Thai seafood restaurant 300 hundred meters away from the hotel.

‚h was disappointing that transparency was bad for diving's going with a purpose. The person who goes with a purpose will be careful of the season (the diving).

Stayed at Casa Del Mar - Langkawi, Malaysia.

The beach at Casa del Mar is only ok. The Datai beach is still the best but not open to public. Try the Tanjung Rhu beach, which is probably the most spectacular public beach. Car rentals start from RMB40 and don't take up the offers from Kuala Kedah or Perlis side, but haggle on the island itself.

As two great lovers of food, the hotel did not disappoint. We ate three out of the four nights at ‘The Rhu’ fusion restaurant, which did a wide array of delicious and beautifully presented dishes.
The Sanpan boat ride up the nearby mangrove swamp to feed the Eagles is well worth a morning or afternoon.

Langkawi was beautiful but, unfortunately, a day or two after we arrived, the rainy season began and it poured down every day. Apparently, the best time to go is between December and April. There is a holistic spa in a hotel beside the snake sanctuary which offers reasonable value afternoon packages so we indulged in an afternoon's pampering on one of the rainy days, which was lovely.
The Datai Beach is noted on the tourist maps as a sight to see but it is not open to the public and belongs to the two posh hotels in the area. However, they very kindly took us down for a look and it was something else.

The location (beach) of the hotel is superb. Langkawi is a beautiful island with some possibilities for trips (rice fields, villages, rainforest, waterfalls, island hopping). One can easily rent a car, but it is not easy to arrange a motorbike in the neighbourhood of the hotel. There are sufficient sporting activities and tours via the hotel. For restaurants, you fully depend on the hotel! The quality of the food was generally ok and I especially liked the atmosphere of the beach fronted restaurant (mediterranean style). Note that in September and October, the weather is more rainy on Langkawi, though there is no clear raining season.
