We travelled the island by hiring a car. The entire island can be covered in 4/5 hrs. But we reccommend to spend the entire day by going from one beach to another. Handicrafts / Galleries were best liked by us, especially the Bartik Gallery. Excellent !! Sceneic beauty of the islands and caves is fascinating. General food is good and gratfying. One can relax and enjoy.

Langkawi is ideal for a relaxing holiday. It is a beautiful island and relatively uncommercialised. We visited Langkawi in April, in low season. So their were very few other tourists, yet everything was still open. Pentai Cenang has several good restaurants (foremost of these being at the Beach Garden resort) and bars and a superb beach; clean and quiet with golden sand and clear warm water. In Pentai Cenang the Underwater World is well worth a visit and the Rice Garden was an unexpectedly interesting and enjoyable experience. There is ample opportunity for water sports and the highlight of our holiday was a day out snorkelling at a nearby coral reef; something definately not to be missed.
Also, everyone we encountered was friendly and helpful.

Good choice of local restaurants within walking distance. Try Orkid - excellent seafood at ridiculously cheap prices.
Not good for snorkelling as no coral and limited visibility.

As for the destination it was very relaxing. The beach was cleanish and empty when we visited. The road that runs along the hotel entrances is a bit grubby and smelly but worth a walk along to see the locals. We didn't actually do any touring, just read books and relaxed and ate!

We've never been to Langkawi before but traveled around the East Coast Malaysian Islands quite a bit. I found Langkawi to be much more beautiful than the East coast. There was more to see and we enjoyed an amazing eco-tour where eagles, flying foxes, monkeys, and monitor lizards were seen in their natural environment. We were also lucky enough to see a group of several dolphins that had joined us in a tributary. That was amazing! The rest of the time we spent on the beach and at the pool.

I thought Langkawi was beautiful but not enough care is being taken with rubbish disposal and recycling. It was very disappointing to see such a beautiful place being treated as a rubbish dump.

We hired a car and saw most of the sights (that is, those highlighted in the tourist map) well within 6 hours. We even managed to 'discover' the Summer Palace which is not 'advertised' but which we find very interesting - a set for the movie Anna and the King - at Pantai Kok.
