The waters in Langkawi are beautifully warm and the beach at Pentai Tengah is considered one of the best.... true. Although, beware of jellyfish as there are no signs at Langkawi Village Resort to warn you of the dangers and as the water is "murky" due to the constant swell and fine coral sand being churned up you will not see approaching danger until it is too late.
For snorkelling your only real option is to visit the Palau Payar Marine Park. An enjoyable day out with reasonable snorkelling although be prepared for the amount of debris floating around.... that scratchy/nippy feeling on you leg could equally be a crisp packet as a small grouper checking out the food possibilities!!! Scuba diving is offered here, if you are a serious and experienced diver you will probably know better than to bother as there is no great variety and the visibility is relatively poor.

It was my first stay in Langkawi and I am sure it will not be the last. The place is delightful and highly relaxing. I have never been bothered by any hawker on the beach or anywhere.
Food is especially delicious and I could not find any restaurant where food disappointed me. All were excellent.
Taxi fares are reasonable and though taxis have no meter, all fares are fixed and clearly indicated.
I did not take any tour, but spent half a day shopping in Kuah, which was enough. There are plenty of stores selling handcraft all around and it seems to me there is no need to compare between them as prices are EXACTLY the same everywhere, with all stores offering a 30% rebate. I could not find as good deals as I did in Bali, hence I would recommend not to buy anything at any price.
My last commment is about the timing. I stayed in Langkawi at about Easter time, ideally between the high season ending in March, and the rain season starting in May. Therefore the hotel and restaurants were almost empty and my stay all the more relaxing.

Restaurant "Fat Mum" just around the corner offered excellent and reasonably priced meals. We can really recommend to rent a motorbike to explore the island.

We particularly recommend the boat trips (especially the eagle trip) and hiring a jeep for the day.

I liked Langkawi very much. I recommend touring different resorts. Not a whole lot to do regarding shopping. Langkawi Fair seemed to be the best in that regard.

Good for families, not for singles.
For backpackers Cenang beach seemed not too bad. Food in general was good, although a beer was only to be had at the chinese restaurants as Malaysian run restaurants are mostly halal (Islam: no alcohol).
Quiet, no hawkers, haslers, beggars.
Little to buy (copy-wise).
Around the island tour was good and worth wile.
Taxis are cheap, but english is not widely spoken by the drivers. Some have great english though. It's luck of the draw.

I'm surprised that golf packages not marketed in practise at all in Langawi! For example Gunung Golf Resort is very nice course for both beginners and professionals. We played there twice.
High level restaurants either not available or not properly marketed in Langawi.
For example,in those 5 star hotels we have either been or visited there are no single high level restaurant having wide menu of Chinese cuisines. Further, for visitors who are staying in a same hotel for a period of one week the menues are absolutely too short for have enough variety. For example In Bali, there are much more oprtions to dine in high level restaurants.

The hotel is not within walking distance of any restaurants, shops or beaches, so hiring motorbikes, which can be done reasonably cheaply through the hotel, is recommended. Great places to visit include Cenang beach and Barn Thai restaurant, which is built on stilts in the mangrove and accessed by a 400m footbridge, from which you can spot monkeys, monitor lizards and other wildlife. Good value trips, which you can book from the hotel (or get even cheaper if you ask around), include snorkeling in the marine park, where we swam with tropical fish and baby sharks, and a boat trip in the mangrove, during which we visited an uninhabited island and had to chase monkeys off the beach before we could sunbathe.

Taxis are the only way to get around on Langkawi. They are cheap and barginable though. Right across the road from the hotel is a brand new snake sanctuary that was not only informative but a lot of fun to visit. You can even see people kiss the head of a common cobra.
