Beware of overcharges by taxi drivers and some (e.g. those at railway stations) even take several passengers. Some taxi drivers gang-up to charge unreasonably high rates (e.g. outside Twin Towers, high-class hotels and shopping centres). If unsure, ask a few drivers for price indication; walk a couple of blocks away to catch the taxis; confirm with the driver that they don't take passengers on the way. Charges of hotel taxis / limos may be double of the normal rates but they are safer (because generally large hotels keep a record of your taxi's registration and driver) and may still be cheaper than those gang-up taxis. If there is a taxi driver you feel you can trust, ask for his contact number & use the same driver for other trips without call-out charge.

Hotel Mutiara KL is a definitely choice of stay. Minutes away from shopping areas KLCC and Bukit Bintang; clubbing spots. The monorail is just in front of the hotel, so it is very convenient to travel around, minus the at times peak hours terrible traffic jams! However one word of catious. Do get your coach tickets from reputable bus companies! I had a very bad experience at the Pudu Raya bus station. My gf and I was left stranded when we were told that our 12.30am KL-Sin bus had broke down. The bus operators were not helpful at all and simply left us to scramble for help! Luckily, a local girl came to our rescue. She was also stuck at the same terrible situation, and offered to put us up at her place for the night, till we get the next bus, the next morning! We really had to thank our lucky stars! The local Malaysians are actually very warm and helpful. However, I cannot say the same thing about the cunning bus companies at Pudu Raya. We got there again the next morning, and the company where we bought the tickets from, was very rude and at first refuse to accept the reissued tickets! A definitely unpleasant part of KL. I wish the govt will do something about the chaotic run Pudu Raya station! However there is a wonderful part of KL. That is the helpful KL girl, who had help us. What an adventure for me and my gf!

Location is ideal for folks shopping around the Bukit Bintang, Imbi, Jln Sultan areas. Fantastic area for shopping, eating/dining and partying, except for the next caveat. Beware of snatch thefts though!!! Really notorious area for bag-snatching-jokers-on-Honda-C70s! You've been warned!

If you are travelling with small children as I did there are some great places to take them. The Times Square building has an indoor amusement park over 3 floors and is suitable for small kids. Sunway lagoon is also an excellent water park for small children. It's great fun even when its raining as the water and the rain is warm. Melaka zoo was good fun but we found the town itself unexciting. Batu caves is a must but be warned there are nearly 200 steps going up. We found the firefly trip good although the journey to it is long.
Shopping is excellent especially at Sungi Wang. You can get discount off a lot of items if you ask - 10 ringgit instead of the price marked 25 ringgit. Travelling around is fairly straight forward on the trains and mono rail. The staff and public were very helpful. The taxis are also fairly cheap. If you are going on trips use the taxis off thhe street and haggle over the price its alot cheaper than useing the hotel ones.
Just two words of warning though. Firstly if you are using a taxi from the airport to the hotel, use the prepaid service inside the airport and don't get caught out by those very friendly faces looking to help you out. Secondly is very important for the ladies. Avoid carrying a hand bag is you can or carry a very small one which you can tuck away. If you are walking on the pavements walk on the inside and not by the curb. There have been a lot of hand bag snatches and one very serious injury in May 2004. Malaysia is a great place to visit but sadly never enough time to do all the things you want, so I'll be going back.

Watch out for con-men who pose as policeman and rob your valuables. I was stopped by them, but due to presence of mind, managed to escape. But two other families staying at the Hotel were not so lucky. Pimping is common in the busy shopping area of Bukit Bintang. Was approached even though I was with family. Food is fantastic. Very good infrastructure, but very poor taxi service. Have to haggle the price before getting in the taxi. Watch out for the metered taxis, as they may take you for a ride before dropping you at your destination. Wear conservative clothing else you will be stared/oogled at. When visiting Kuala Lumpur(KL), one must make a trip to the nearby Genting Highlands. This boasts of the fastest cable car journey in the world and longest cable in South-east Asia. Back in KL, a visit to Petaling Street is a must. You can find all authentic fakes..hehehe..be sure to bargain a lot. The city is fabulous and vibrant with culture. Will definitely re-visit. Thumbs Up from me.

We were on a shopping expedition so got around by taxi. Beware, if you get the hotel to call a taxi, they will call the new upswept LNG powered taxis. While these are comfortable and go by meter, they charge 60% more than the red cabs that regularly sweep up to the hotel doors. So wait for one of those.

To traveller's going to KL. Don't be conned by taxi driver. Some taxi drivers don't turn on the fare meter. So they just impose the fare according to the destination. Bargain with them. Or just close the door and find other metered taxi. And if you are lucky to get one, they will drive slowly and pretend they don't know the destination. Can be very frustrating too. Are they too desperate for money? I hope that the Malaysian Government will look into this matter. If u wanna attract tourists. Please change the system. Vehicles are not abiding to the traffic rules and regulations. I wonder if there is a rule there? Cause we nearly got knocked down by car. No vehicle stop at the zebra crossing. Maybe all of them are blind!

KL is a terrific place to visit. Make sure when you use taxis be firm - demand that they use their meters. We had one driver from KLCC who was going to charge us RM35.00 to go to Mid Valley Megamall a trip that costs approx RM6.00!!
A visit to the Petronas Twin Towers is a must - take the Skybridge tour and also go back at night for some spectacular photographs.

Since the hotel is near to most major shopping malls, it's easy to get around - for those who are adventurous you can have a slow walk, enjoying the "atmosphere" but for those who have doubt of the ways around KL, you could take a public transport. A little reminder though, for those who take cab, know how to bargain, see the distance between your destination from the place you took the cab. Some taxi-drivers took advantage of charging tourists at a very high price just for a short distance. Most cabs in KL charged on per head basis (minimum MYR2.00 per head) not based on meter.
