The drive up to Kuantan is much better than it used to be but with the upgrading of the highway, there are plenty of places with temporary surfaces. When the highway is completed, it should be a wonderful drive.
I haven't been to Kuantan for almost 20 years and the beaches are still fabulous with some surf. Generally the beaches are very clean but I would recommend wearing surf shoes to protect your feet as there is alot of sharp coral and shells to flay your soles.
There is a wonderful seafood restaurant just on the outskirts of Kuantan, heading towards Kuala Trengganu and the resorts, called Pak Soo. It reminds me of the seafood places of my childhood along Pasir Panjang.
